Letters written to Millard Fillmore, president of the Buffalo Historical Society, in support of Ketchum's claim that Buffalo was named for the bison that once ranged as far east as Buffalo Creek. The first letter was sent in response to a letter by N.T. Strong, printed in the Buffalo Commercial Advertiser; the second presents additional evidence in support of Ketchum's theory, in response to remarks by "Mr. Shea" regarding the first letter.

Includes an address to the Buffalo Common Council, 4 Oct. 1837, proposing the donation of the old village cemetery property on Delaware Street for a boys' academy and a girls' seminary; a list of desks and other school equipment auctioned in 1838, and leases for operation of the academy to Charles Bishop, 1 Nov. 1830, and to Cyrus M. Fay, 1 Apr. 1840.

Salisbury and William Ketchum in 1863, on the origin of Buffalo's name; Strong's lecture on Red Jacket, 29 Dec. 1863; and a letter written by Strong, 31 Oct. 1871, to N. K. Hall, president of the Buffalo Historical Society, about Blacksnake, a war chief of the Wolf Clan of the Seneca tribe of Indians. The letter was written just before W. H. Greene and N. K. Hall donated a portrait of Blacksnake by Lars G. Sellstedt to the Buffalo Historical Society. Attached to the Strong letter is Sellstedt's receipt, 27 Apr. 1871, for sale of the painting.
