This collection consists of records of Columbia University's School of Architecture. It includes correspondence, circa 1886-1915, much of which is addressed to Frank Dempster Sherman, relating to school matters. Correspondents include Richard F. Bach, W.H. Burn, Nicholas Murray Butler, Clark M. Birge, Francis B. Crock, Charles S. Danielson, Milton J. Davies, James C. Egbert, Goldwin Goldsmith, A.D.F. Hamlin, F.R. Heuttin, Thomas King, Maurice E. Laranoux, Austin Willard Lord, Ben J. Lubschez, Thomas R. Price, John K. Rees, Edwin J. Robin, Ogden N. Rood, William Sartain, Levering Tyson, Walker L. Ward, William Robert Ware, Charles P. Warren, and Walter F. Wilson. Also included are two notebooks containing notes and diagrams relating to perspective problems, one dated 1895, belonged to Prof. R.S. Woodward; eleven photographs of student drawings of original architectural problems, undated and 1913; fifty-two student drawings, 1947-1950, done by students of Prof. J.G. Van Derpool; photographs of students, faculty, and school buildings, 1880s-1920s; correspondence, pamphlets, minutes, publications, lists of officers, receipts, circa 1910s-1950, of the Alumni Association of the School of Architecture; and miscellaneous clippings (including clippings of articles about Marcia Mead, first woman graduate of the School of Architecture), greeting cards, announcements, programs, and certificates. Also, reminiscences, correspondence, clippings, and ephemera of William T. Partridge, a student and colleague of William Robert Ware. The reminiscences consist of twenty-six essays that describe personal memoirs about events and persons; included are reminiscences of Henry Bacon, Andrew Carnegie, M. George Chedonne, Henry Gould, Paul Gmelin, Charles F. McKim (eleven essays), Robert Swain Peabody, and John Goddard Stearns, the firm of McKim, Mead & White, and others. The Partridge correspondence includes letters from Edward Cabot, William Anderson, William Adams Delano, Hubert Ripley, and Philip Sawyer, and letters to W.A. Delano, Adolf K. Placzek, H. Ripley, and James Grote Van Derpool. Additional materials include carbons of typescript correspondence of lectures given by Dean William A. Boring (academic year 1933-1934) and Professor Theodor Karl Rohdenburg (academic year 1946-1947). Also design problems, the earliest of which were given in conjunction with the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, from academic years 1918-1919, 1926-1927, 1936-1937, 1949-1950, and 1957-1958. Also materials for the Architecture 51 class; correspondence of Joseph Hudnut; course outlines; correspondence relating to the search for a new dean of the school, 1957-1963.
