Williams, J. (John), 1817-1899. John Williams papers, 1843-1880.

Title: John Williams papers, 1843-1880.

These papers consist chiefly of intimate and wide-ranging correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham. Only four items date before 1851, when Williams became Bishop Coadjutor of Connecticut. They praise Whittingham's sermon on the priesthood of 1843, which caused controversy in the Diocese of Maryland, and minor matters. Papers of Williams's episcopate include much material on affairs of the Diocese of Connecticut, the General Conventions, and issues confronting the Church. Much concerns relations with the Roman Catholic and Congregational Churches, and especially with the Church of England, including negotiations about Lambeth Conferences, doubts that the Church should attend the Conference of 1877, correspondence with British bishops, particularly the Bishops of Winchester and Edinburgh, questions of vesting the patriarchate in the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1874, and attitudes towards Archbishop Tait. Letters of the Reverend A. Cleveland Coxe comment on Williams's character and abilities. The Bishop's letters frequently express admiration and friendship for Whittingham, consulting him on many matters of policy and administration, such as business of the House of Bishops, efforts of the House of Clerical and Lay Deputies to reduce the authority of bishops, canons against ritual, requirements for theological studies, etc. Letters of the Civil War period support Whittingham's controversial stand for the Union in Maryland; consult him on the legality of Bishop Henry C. Lay's resignation of part of his jurisdiction, 1861; mention Bishop Thomas Atkinson's communication of 1862 as a ray of light; discuss resignation of rectors in Washington, D.C., 1862; and oppose drafting clergymen for military duty, 1865. Williams's Civil War prayers are also included. Later letters deal with expansion of the Episcopal Church in the western states, praise Bishop John B. Kerfoot, support the Freedmans' Commission, 1865-1868, and urge Whittingham to write a Pastoral Letter from the Bishops to the Episcopal Church at large, 1868. There is also material concerning the Diocese of New York, 1869; the conduct and schism of Bishop George D. Cummins, 1869-1875; Williams's controversy with Ewer, 1870; work of the Committee on Theological Studies of the House of Bishops, 1871; Williams's opposition to the Society of St. John the Evangelist (Cowley Fathers) 1871-1872; High and Low Church controversies; Williams's strenuous visitations of 1873, with ninety-seven services in ninety-one days; and affairs of the Dioceses of Illinois, Wisconsin, Fond du Lac, Kentucky, and Iowa. Substantial material concerns Williams's relations with many bishops, including Levi S. Ives, Charles C. Penick, Abram N. Littlejohn, and William C. Doane, as well as many other clergymen, among them James De Koven.

Concerns Oertel and his family in Orange Spring, Fla., Washington, D.C. (1883-1886), Sewanee, Tenn. (at the University of the South), Nashville, Tenn., St. Louis, Mo., Vienna, Va., and Bel Air, Md. Topics include: money problems, fortunes of his two sons and daughter, his ill health, religious reflections, work on art works, particularly the first two of his series of four paintings on the redemption of mankind. Mentions clergymen and other prominent figures of the day, some of which are listed below. Other items are clippings, photographs, and letters; and an AMS, 1847, by Oertel, of German poems (12 p.).

Correspondence with Bishop William Rollinson Whittingham and other papers concerning Atkinson's career, affairs of the Dioceses of Maryland and North Carolina, and the Episcopal Church in general. Much material relates to Atkinson's rectorship of St. Peter's Church, Baltimore, 1843-1851, and his founding of Grace Church, Baltimore, 1850-1853, with references to other churches. Approximately three hundred sermons, mostly manuscripts, reveal the bishop's interests, views, and theological beliefs. These include sermons on national blessings, 1845, and on morals, missions, the Church of England, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, the Sunday School Union, the pew rent system, and the death of Bishop Whittingham, 1879. Atkinson's primary charge to the Diocese of North Carolina, 1855, stressed the need for the Church to reach the mass of society, to have ministers from more than one class, to encourage education, and to relax the rubrics in order to permit flexibility of worship. His letters deal with many subjects, among them the Society for Promotion of Evangelical Knowledge, the American Bible Society, the Church Beneficial Society of Baltimore, and the General Theological Seminary in New York City. There are views on baptism, ritualism, and relations with the Roman Catholic Church and the Church of England (especially the Lambeth Conference of 1867); descriptions of Atkinson's parochial visitations in North Carolina and his performance of episcopal services for Bishop Whittingham in Maryland, 1869; and comments on many bishops, among them Theodore B. Lyman, and other clergy, including Nathaniel Hewitt and Horatio H. Hewitt. Other papers relate to work of the Committee on Theological Education appointed by the House of Bishops, 1871; a request for an assistant bishop for North Carolina, 1872; and opposition to a division of the diocese, 1877. Civil War items deal with the separation of the Episcopal Churches North and South, and minor matters. A memorandum of 1865 by Bishop Whittingham describes his meeting with Atkinson at the first General Convention after the war and Atkinson's role in reuniting the Churches. Beginning with 1865, there are references to church work for Blacks, including Atkinson's support of the Freedmans' Commission. He visits Washington to plead the cause of freed slaves in the South, 1868. A letter of 1872 concerns a Negro deacon, William F. Floyd, and the Freedmans' Commission in North Carolina. In 1873 Atkinson doubts there is any Black man qualified to be a bishop for the freedmen, but states no qualified man should be rejected because of his color. He proposes a system of suffragan bishops for each diocese to take care of work among Blacks, Indians, Germans, and other minorities.

Wide-ranging correspondence concerning affairs of the Diocese of Connecticut and of the Episcopal Church throughout the world, chiefly with Bishops James Kemp and William Rollinson Whittingham, of Maryland. There is much material on education, particularly affairs of the General Theological Seminary (both the New Haven and in New York City), and of Washington College, later Trinity College, in Hartford, Conn., which Brownell founded, 1824-1837. Private comments and official correspondence concern many bishops, including Levi S. Ives, Philander Chase, Horatio Southgate, Henry C. Lay, Thomas Atkinson, and A. Cleveland Coxe, as well as many other clergymen. Brownell supports the missions to Greece and Turkey, 1846-1850, and writes about relations with the Orthodox and Roman Catholic Churches. Substantial correspondence concerns relations with the Church of England, including communications from the American Bishops to the Church of England regarding encroachments of the civil power on that Church, 1850-1852; discussion of the activities of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in ecclesiastical matters, 1864; and the Tractarian movement. Other papers include Bownell's views on controversies of the High and Low Church parties, theological questions, and Civil War prayers. There are also posthumous comments on his career.
