This collection is predominately letters to William R. Smith (and wife Rebecca), as well as drafts of some of his outgoing correspondence, 1850s-1890s. Subject matter discussed includes veteran medical pension issues, land inquiries, prospective railroad projects and legislation, politics, and family matters. A frequent correspondent is Judge A. W. (Asahel W.) Hubbard, a Sioux City resident who was an associate of Smith in the Frontier Guards and the First National Bank, and also championed Sioux City's railroad interests through his seat as a U.S. Representative. In the later decades of the 19th century there are frequent letters from English parliament member and agriculturalist James Howard who corresponded with Smith on farming and free trade issues. In addition to the correspondence series there are miscellaneous documents and ephemera organized by topic and including appointments and commissions, paperwork related to some medical examinations of Civil War veterans, drafts of legislation related to railroads, paperwork from the U.S. Land Office, and various items representing Smith's civic, fraternal, and professional affiliations. Also of interest are several drafts of medical lectures or articles prepared by Smith on the subjects of "Food and Drink" and "Hygiene, Physical and Mental".

Farwell and Company in Milwaukee and William Farnsworth in Fond du Lac; Elisha Morrow papers, 1837-1849, consisting of scattered personal and business letters, some correspondence commenting on the defeat of the proposed Wisconsin constitution in 1847, and assorted way-bills of the Morrow and White Stage line between Green Bay and Fond du Lac.

Title: Papers, 1813-1886, 1925.

Correspondence of numerous members of the Howard family from several sections of the United States. James C. Howard came from Rossie, New York, in 1836, to settle on a large farm in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. There are letters from his brother, Dean S. Howard, a building contractor who invented a new type of dredging machine and who worked on harbors and canals in Upper Canada, the Middle West, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Nicaragua; from his wife, Sophronia Porter; from his children and their families in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and California; and from other relatives.
