Philip Turpin graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1774 after finishing a doctoral dissertation on epilepsy. The outbreak of war in America left him stranded in Great Britain without the resources to obtain safe passage to Virginia. He served as a surgeon on the HMS "Heart of Oak" during the American Revolution, and in 1780, he returned home onboard Lord Cornwallis's ship. Once back in Virginia, he was not allowed to leave the British army, where he served as an attendant to the wounded. After the war, Turpin took up residence in Richmond, Va. He was successful, after Thomas Jefferson spoke on his behalf, in appealing to the Governor of Virginia for reinstatement as a citizen. Turpin's first wife, Caroline, died in 1787; he married secondly Martha Osborne. Turpin also had several daughters and was related by marriage to Thomas Jefferson.

Jefferson discusses Turpin's diffiulty in returning home after his medical studies in Great Britain and Paris; his service in the Royal Navy and efforts to join the American forces. There are brief mentions of Cowpens, Charleston, Fort Washington, London, Long Island and Staten Island, Benedict Arnold, Sir Guy Carleton, Lord Cornwallis, Governor Thomas Nelson, the Utaws, George Washington, Acts of Virginia Assembly, Foster's Crown law, Governor's proclamation and the manuscript records of Congress.

Papers of Dr. Philip Turpin, a Virginia native and medical student at the University of Edinburgh. He served reluctantly in the British navy and army during the American Revolution and later moved to Richmond, Va., near his family. Collection discusses life in 18th century Great Britain and events in Revolutionary era America and Europe. Postwar letters discuss slavery and tobacco production in Virginia as well as American politics and military affairs. Some letters concern Turpin's brother, Horatio, who served in the Kentucky militia after the war. Also included are an account book and miscellaneous items.
