Subject files, correspondence, financial and legal records, printed materials, notes and memorandum, and surveyor's notes represent the documents located in the Adele Looscan Texana Collection. The subject files illustrate early Houston life and Texas history and include documents associated with A.C. and J.K. Allen, William Garrett, Nathaniel Lynch, Daniel Richardson, Stephen Richardson, Sidney Sherman, Thomas William Ward, and Abel H. White. Correspondence consists of individual letters (many authors or recipients unknown) written from 1837-1849; correspondents include L.M. Hitchcock, Bartlett Sims, and William M. Eastland, veteran of San Jacinto. The 56 financial records include bank drafts, certificates, promissory notes, receipts, statements of account, and general records. The legal records consist of an abstract of title, an 1839 bill to charter the Bank of Texas, contracts and agreements, certificates, deeds, estate and probate records, a power of attorney and a summons. Of interest is an 1842 indictment issued by the Republic of Texas against James M. McGee for playing cards. The Texana printed materials contain broadsides dating from the time of the Texas Revolution to the Civil War era, a Stephen F. Austin calling card, Confederate and Texian bond certificates, and election tickets. The collection also contains nine notes and memorandum and four surveyor's sketches and field notes. All fragments and photostats associated with the Adele Briscoe Looscan Collection are arranged within this collection.

Correspondence, legal documents, and Monuments of Washington's Patriotism, a book used concurrently as a scrapbook, document John G. Tod's professional and personal life from 1839-1851. Correspondence relating to Tod's Texas naval career include two letters from Louis P. Cooke including the notification of his commission, a letter from Reuben M. Potter concerning the smuggling of slaves from Cuba to Texas, and one from Samuel M. Williams about financing the Texas Navy. Also of interest are Tod's 1839 commission as a commander in the Texas Navy, a memo Tod wrote in 1841 establishing the provenance of a pen used by President Mirabeau Lamar to halt an execution and an Abstract of title (1824-1897) for land John G. Tod and F.C. Sandow once owned in the Nathaniel Lynch league. Monuments of Washington's patriotism (1838) was given by Tod to David G. Burnet in 1839. Used as a scrapbook, the book contains Tod's presentation letter to Burnet, a letter from George Washington (1779), a ten pound paper note from the colony of New York (1758), a carte de visite of Washington, a hand painted bookmark, an advertisement from the 1851 Industrial Exhibition in London, and several newspaper clippings. Papers collected by Tod include three letters and a legal document (1837-1841). The correspondence refers to the treatment of the prisoners Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Juan N. Almonte, and Nuñez after the Battle of San Jacinto, the Texas Navy, and administrative duties of the president of the Republic of Texas. An 1837 agreement between Nicolai Hansen, a carpenter, and Thomas William Ward concerns Hansen traveling to Houston to work for Ward for four months. Correspondents include David G. Burnet, William H. Patton, Sam Houston, Peter W. Grayson, Mirabeau B. Lamar, and Joseph Eve.

Dudley H. Ward (1845-1864) confederate soldier and prisoner of war, was born in 1845 in Austin, Texas. The Dudley Ward Papers, 1863-1864, contains correspondence and one parole certificate documenting Ward's experience as a confederate soldier at the Seige of Vicksburg, in camps in Mississippi and Texas, and in Galveston during the yellow fever epidemic.
