Title: Drawings, 1945-1969 bulk 1946-1957.

When the Instrument Engineering Lab was organized in 1946, a new system of identifying and storing drawings and blueprints produced by the lab was developed. Drawing numbers consist of a letter signifying the size of the drawings and a sequential number was given to each drawing as it was made. Some drawings were received by the lab which predated the Lab and do not have lab numbers. Other drawings were received by the Lab from project draftsmen and are numbered differently. Many drawings made by the lab have been lost. The drawings depict instruments designed and/or built at or for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Designers include Theodore R. Folsom, Jeffrey Dean Frautschy, John Dove Isaacs, L.W. Kidd and James Snodgrass, among other unidentified or partially identified designers. Many of the drawings were made by Madeleine Miller Mahnkan, draftsman for James Snodgrass. The drawings depict instrumentation, circuitry, building and ships plans. Instruments include the Folsom Plankton Splitter, the Isaacs/Kidd Mid-Water Trawl; nets, dredges, bottom samplers, plankton pressure chambers, titrators, temperature gradient recorders, corers, an insitu radiance meter, a gnathodynamometer, wave meters, telemetry equipment, depressors,a scoopfish sampler, and other equipment. The accession also includes drawings of temporary Navy buildings on the SIO campus, ships plans for a 95-foot research vessel, an outboard profile of the R/V Ellen B. Scripps and a map of Pueblo Lot 1264, the SIO property on Mt. Soledad.

The collection consists of chronological files of the S.I.O. Office of the Deputy Director from January 1, 1981-December 31, 1987. Included in this collection are the chronological files of Deputy Director Justin E. Langille, III, dated December 1982-December 31, 1987 and a few folders titled daily calls, calendars & notes dated January 1,-December 31, 1985. Also included in this collection is correspondence of Deputy Director Jeffery D. Frautschy dated January 1-December 31, 1982. There is a small amount of correspondence of George L. Matson as Assistant Director for Administration dated 1981.

The accession consists of the records of SIO Facilities Manager James Blattenberger. The collection is divided into six series: Subject Files, UCSD Capital Program, Project Files, Space Series, Committee Series and Parking Series. The accession also includes one box of files of Blattenberger's administrative assistant, Shirley Bentley. The accession documents space utilization, planning, construction, and facilities management at SIO during the period 1976-1993. The accession also includes some files documenting space utilization back to 1965 which were given to Blattenberger by Jeffery D. Frautschy. Subject Files, arranged alphabetically, include material on the administration of SIO, the planning of space and specific facilities, files documenting conferences and meetings, and files on subjects relevant to facilities management, such as SIO telecommunications, police, parking and computer facilities. UCSD Capital Program series includes information generated by SIO when planning projects for the UCSD Minor and Major Capital Program. Project Files include files on specific projects, including files on virtually every building at SIO. This series includes extensive files on the Stephen Birch Aquarium Museum, Nierenberg Hall, and IGPP II. The Space Series includes studies and lists of space use at SIO, including periodic space audits. These files also include documentation of committee actions related to space, and memoranda documenting space assignments. The Committee Series includes files of committees on which Blattenberger served, and files of committees relevant to space planning and facilities management. These include records of the Capital Outlay and Space Advisory Committee, the Chancellor's Parking and Transportation Alternative Advisory Committee, and the Security Advisory Committee. Some records of the Marine Sciences Physical Planning Committee can be found in this series, additional MSPPC files are in the Subject Series. The Parking Series includes one cubic foot of records on parking on the SIO campus.

The records consist of the Director's central files, a file containing material generated by Director William A. Nierenberg, Assistant Director George L. Matson, Assistant Director Jeffery D. Frautschy, and their office staffs. The records include correspondence, memoranda, scientific reports, financial records, proposals, minutes of meetings and other materials that document the planning, administration, and daily operation at SIO. The collection includes material on all SIO administrative units, including the Deep Sea Drilling Project. The records include files on conferences and symposia held at SIO, files on distinguished visitors, and files documenting the development of the Scripps Campus. There is also material on gifts and endowments, international cooperation, personnel, and committees. Committee files include material documenting internal SIO committees. Large groups of records document the relationship between SIO and federal and international agencies, as well as cooperation with other University of California institutions.
