Title: George P. Garrett Papers, 1929-2008 (bulk 1960-2000)

George P. Garrett (1929-2008) was a poet, editor, author, and professor of English. The papers of George P. Garrett span the years 1929 to 2000 with the bulk of the material being dated between 1960 and 1990. The papers were initially collected and assembled by author, bibliographer, and publisher Stuart T. Wright. Wright published a number of Garrett's works at his Palaemon Press and also assembled the Stuart Wright Bibliographic Collection of George Garrett (see related materials held by the Rubenstein Library). Additional materials were received by the Library directly from George Garrett. The papers document Garrett's literary career as an author of novels, short stories, poetry, and dramatic works (including filmscripts) and the tremendous influence he had as an English professor and an editor on an entire generation of writers, particularly in the South. Correspondence with numerous authors, publishers, and educators offers much information about the history of 20th-century Southern literature, publishing, and literary education. The collection is divided into the Writings Series (with subseries of Writings by Garrett, Writings Edited by Garrett, Writings by Others, and Proofs); the Correspondence Series (with 5 subseries of alphabetically and chronologically arranged correspondence); the Audiovisual Material Series; and the Miscellaneous Papers Series.

Title: Charleen Swansea Papers, 1928-2004

Charleen Whisnant Swansea (b. 1933) graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in 1956 with an M.A. in Modern Poetry. In summer 1956, she married the architect Murray Whisnant. She taught English at UNC for one year before moving back to Charlotte, where she taught at Queens College until 1964. In 1964, Swansea founded , an annual magazine that published the work of southern authors and artists. She edited the magazine until 1970. She then founded Red Clay Publishers to publish books by women writers. Red Clay Reader The collection includes correspondence and other materials, some relating to Swansea's relationship with poet Ezra Pound. Letters, most written in 1955, chiefly concern daily activities, mutual acquaintances, and, to a lesser extent, literary matters. In 1946, Ezra Pound was declared mentally unfit to stand trial for treason and was committed to Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, D.C., where he remained for 12 years. Other items include ideograms in Chinese characters made by Pound for Swansea, writings by Swansea and others, printed material about Pound, and other items. Also included are editorial and other correspondence, editorial notes, business records, publicity material, manuscripts and art work submitted for publication, mailing lists, and other items, 1963-1976, relating to the . Some of the authors represented in these materials appear as online catalog headings. Photographs include a few of Ezra Pound and several relating to the . The Addition of April 2008 includes Swansea's unpublished memoirs; a book authored by Swansea titled (South Carolina ETV, 1990); a videotape of a speech given by Swansea at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.; and a DVD collection of documentaries by Ross McElwee in which Swansea appears.
