In 1938 Clayton Albert, Thomas W. Martin, Colonel Marion Rushton, and Peter A. Brannon traveled by car from Claiborne, Ala. to St. Stephens, Ala. and went through Mobile, Ala. One of their destinations was Ellicott's boundary markers. These markers were placed at the 31 degree North Latitude which was the original boundary between the United States and the Floridas (hence the scrapbook's title). After the trip Peter Brannon created this photographic scrapbook, based on the group's experiences. The photographs, the majority being 3 X 4, focus on historical events, places, and people. Of particular interest are the photographs of Fort Morgan, Fort Mims, the Mount Vernon Hospital for Insane Negroes, Blakely, Ala., St. Stephens, Ala., and Alabama residents including tenant farmers, plantation owners, local gentry, African Americans, Cajuns, and Creoles. Brannon also includes typewritten transcripts of primary and secondary sources on historical events such as LaFayette's visit, Alabama settlement, and the Creek and Civil Wars. These sources include excerpts from the Mobile and Montgomery newspapers and military correspondence with Andrew Jackson. The photographs remain in the original volume with nonbuffered acid-free paper placed between the pages.

Contains the following types of materials: correspondence, personnel documents, clippings. Contains information pertaining to the following wars and time period: 1812, Early Indian, Civil War, Spanish American. Contains information pertaining to the following military units: 8th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment; 28th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment. General description of the collection: Smith-Kirby-Webster-Black-Danner family papers include 23 letters from Confederate officer Edmund Kirby-Smith to his relatives (1848-August 2, 1865). Nine of these letters were written during the secession crisis and during the Civil War. There are also newspaper articles about him written at his death (March 28, 1893). A genealogy of the Smith family and the Lee family written in 1855 which traces the family history from the 16th to mid 19th centuries is included. Correspondence is found by Joseph Lee Smith, Joseph Smith and Ephraim Kirby who served in the early American wars of the War of 1812 and the American Revolution. There are also some letters from the Danners, principally James Danner which pertain to his military service with the 8th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment during the Spanish-American War and with the 28th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Philippine Insurrection. Many relate to his death while on duty at Balayan, Luzon on September 27th, 1900.

Francis Smith Belton (ca. 1791-1861) was a career officer in the U.S. Army who served in the Mexican War. He was married to Harriet Kirby Belton (1798-1873); their son Winfield Scott Belton (1820-1889) fought with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Collection consists of the papers of Francis Smith Belton, Harriet Kirby Belton, Winfield Scott Belton, and members of the Dawson, Kirby and Todd families who were related to the Beltons. Papers of Francis Smith Belton, 1818-1853, include correspondence with his wife, military papers (some are copies) and an autobiography. Papers of Harriet Kirby Belton, 1829-1854, consist mainly of correspondence with her husband during the period of the Mexican War. Winfield Scott Belton's papers, 1832-1887, include correspondence with his wife relating in part to his activities during the Civil War. Kirby family papers consist of correspondence of various family members. Dawson papers, ca. 1763-1813, include correspondence of Joshua Dawson who emigrated to the U.S. from Ireland. Todd family papers, 1819-1861, contain correspondence concerning naval service and political and military events during the Mexican War. Other materials include family and legal papers, certificates of commission, 1859 log, commonplace book from 1835 to 1842, photographs of family members, clippings, and issues of various newspapers.
