Title: David Campbell papers, 1788-1818.

Papers consist of business correspondence, legal documents, accounts, slave records, and other items. Correspondence (1797-1811) is chiefly that of David Campbell at Bell Bluff Plantation (near the Edisto River), Charleston (S.C.), and elsewhere with William Loughton Smith and his attorney William Allen Deas concerning Smith's land holdings, bonds, and other financial and business affairs. Letters also concern Campbell's financial affairs, legal disputes regarding his property, his desire to purchase Bell Bluff Plantation (1807), and his indebtedness to William Loughton Smith. Other correspondents include Adam Tunno and Charles R. Simpson. Accounts (1788-1806) of William Lougthton Smith with David Campbell are for bonds, notes, stocks, rents, and other investments and transactions handled by Campbell for Smith. Some accounts pertain to Smith's subscription of the state debt; there are also two statements (1794) of subscriptions of loans for the debt of the state of South Carolina, detailing totals of principal and interest. Other accounts (ca. 1792-18) of David Campbell are with Tunno & Cox and others. Legal documents include a power of attorney (1800); bonds (1791-1804); a decree concerning a bond; an assignment of judgement (1818) against David Campbell; and an indenture (1805) between David Campbell and William Loughton Smith. Slave records include slave mortgages (1792, 1804) and notes and lists concerning mortgaged slaves.
