Gay family. Gay family account books, 1767-1849

Title: Gay family account books, 1767-1849

A collection of account books belonging to three generations of the Gay family of Farmington, Connecticut. Fisher Gay (1733-1776) was a wealthy merchant in Farmingon. His son, Erastus Gay (1772-1855) operated a general store. Erastus's son, Fisher Gay (1795-1865), took over several of the account books. Over the years the Gays formed partnerships, first with George Treadwell (1804-1807) and later with a Wadsworth (1821-1849). Most of the entries relate to the store. An invoice book lists items purchased in New York for the Farmington store. Other daybooks, ledgers, and account books note purchases from the store. The younger Fisher Gay also used the books to record farm and household transactions.
