Vandelier, Wendell C. Bennett, Junius Bird, Walter A. Fairservis, Marshall H. Saville, Harry L. Shapiro, Herbert Spinden, George C. Vaillant, and Clark Wissler. Field notes encompass daily events, reports of informants, raw data, sketches, photographs, some maps, and Plains Indian winter counts (Indian calendars), including those of Short Bull, Iron Crow, and Battiste Good. Other anthropologists and individuals represented by several field notebooks and areas studied include Charles L. Bernheimer, Southwest exploration; William Beynon, Tsimshian ethnography; D.C. There is much correspondence, linguistic material, notes, photographs, etc., relating to Mason's work in the southwestern U.S., Mexico, and South America. The correspondence is large and covers all aspects of his life, from reports on field work to answering casual questions referred to him through the University of Pennsylvania's museum, where he was a curator from 1926 to 1955. Included in this is much material relating to the American Anthropological Association and for the "American Anthropologist" (1928-1964).

Title: John Alden Mason papers

An archaeological anthropologist and linguist, John Alden Mason spent the majority of his career at the University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. After receiving his undergraduate degree at Penn in 1907, Mason received a doctorate at Berkeley (1911) for his ethnographic work on the Salinan Indians of California, but his diverse interests in later years ran the gamut from Puerto Rican folklore to Piman languages and cultures (including Pima, Papago, Pima Bajo, Northern and Southern Tepehuan, and Tepecano), Mayan, Aztec, and Incan archaeology, and the languages of South American Indians. Mason was curator of the University Museum at Penn from 1926 until his retirement in 1958. The Mason Papers include both in-coming and outgoing correspondence, linguistic material, notes, and photographs relating to Mason's work in the southwestern U.S., northern Mexico, and South America. Centered on the years after Mason's return to Philadelphia in 1926, the collection covers all aspects of Mason's professional life, from reports on field work to answering casual questions referred to him through the University Museum to data and analyses on Piman and other languages. The collection also contains voluminous files relating to the Mason's editorship of the (bulk: 1945-1948). Of special note are a series of class notes (1908-1910) kept by Mason for course work in ethnology, archaeology, and linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania under Edward Sapir and Frank Speck.

George C. Vaillant Director's Office Records

Title: George C. Vaillant Director's Office Records

George Clapp Vaillant was born in Boston, Massachusetts and educated at Noble and Greenough School and Phillips Academy. Vaillant attended Harvard University where he was a lackluster student until he discovered archaeology. Vaillant worked on the cliff-houses in northeastern Arizona and dug at Pecos, New Mexico while an undergraduate. In graduate school, Vaillant worked with George A. Reisner in Egypt. Under the direction of the Carnegie Foundation and Sylvanus Morley, he dug at Chichen Itza in 1926. Following his time in Mexico with Morley, Vaillant was appointed assistant curator at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, in charge of archaeological activities in Mexico. This employment lasted until 1941 when he was appointed Director of the University of Pennsylvania Museum. The George C. Vaillant Administrative records are contained in five archival boxes and consist mostly of correspondence with some administrative records and personal files.
