Collection consists of approximately 5,000 views of Harvard University, including paintings, drawings, engravings, etchings, lithographs, postcards, calendars, illustrated books, and photographs. These include conjectural views of 17th century College buildings by Harold Shurtleff; several 18th century views, such as the Burgis-Price Views and paintings by John Abbot; the 19th century Hinton Views and Quincy Bicentennial View; a proposed plan for Harvard Yard, by H.H. Richardson; three photographic architectural surveys of the University, made in the 1920s and 1930s; and photographs of Tercentenary activities in 1936. Hurd, Nathaniel. Bookplate collection, (bulk 1750-1850).

Title: Bookplate collection, (bulk 1750-1850).

Contains all loose bookplates acquired--without regard to acquisition date--except those that are part of another collection, pasted into a scrapbook, or otherwise deemed too difficult to include. Though the bulk are American, some English ones are included. Engravers and artists represented include the following: Nathaniel Hurd, Henry Dawkins, Peter Rushton Maverick, Joseph Callender, J. J. Barralet, Joseph H. Seymour, E. D. French, James M. Kershaw, Thomas Johnston, Amos Doolittle, Elkanah Tisdale, Simeon Smith Jocelyn, and Paul Revere.

Magoun, Thatcher, 1775-1856. Business records, 1816-1885 (inclusive).

Title: Business records, 1816-1885 (inclusive).

Papers of Thatcher Magoun, Sr., and Thatcher Magoun, Jr., merchants of Boston and Medford, Mass., relating to trade in many parts of the world. Includes correspondence, journals, waste books, ledgers, invoice books, and ships' books. The Magouns sent their ships to ports in Europe, South America, West Indies, Chincha Islands, India, Singapore, Honolulu, Manila, San Francisco, and southern ports in the United States. The commodity most extensively dealt in was guano, which they procured from the Chincha Islands and shipped to Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Havre, and Great Britain.

Calico Printing Manufactory Corporation. Records, 1795-1798.

Title: Records, 1795-1798.

Articles of association, by-laws, minutes of proprietors' meetings, and a copy of the act of incorporation of the Calico Printing Manufactory Corp. Organized in 1795 and incorporated by the Massachusetts General Assembly the following year, the company manufactured printed calico in Boston, and later in Newton, Mass. The first agent of the company, Appleton Prentiss, was replaced in 1797 by Joseph Callender, and many irregularities in the company's books were discovered. Financial problems caused the proprietors to begin liquidating the company late in 1798.

Rice, Howard C. (Howard Crosby), 1904-1980. Papers, ca. 1937-1959.

Title: Papers, ca. 1937-1959.

Collection consists of Rice's research files on American merchant James Swan, his house in Dorchester, his collection of French furniture and decorative art (including Sèvres porcelain), now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, organized into a series of notebooks and files. Files (in Box 1) include copies of articles written by Rice, chapters 1-14 of Rice's unpublished biography of Swan, notes and photocopied documents (some from French repositories) concerning Swan, extensive research on the Swan House in Dorchester, correspondence with museum curators, descendants of Swan, and especially with Ogden Codman on the history of the Swan family and house, and articles on Swan by others. There are two boxes of research notes on index cards (one in Box 2 the other in Box 3). Loose-leaf notebook on Swan (in Box 2) includes letters to Swan from Silas Lee (Wiscasset, 1797 Sept. 24) and John Hammill (Boston, 1797 Oct. 20), a copy of Swan's bookplate engraved by Joseph Callender, photographs of portraits of Swan and family by Gilbert Stuart, of the Swan House, and Paris (relating to Swan's life there), and a genealogical chart of Swan and his descendants. Another notebook (in Box 2) includes photographs and notes on French furniture imported by Swan and others at the Museum of Fine Arts and elsewhere. Box 3 mainly contains pamphlets and articles on French furniture, the Swan collection, and collectors of French furniture in America, and two notebooks containing notes and documents on "toile de jouy" and related French printed textiles.
