Title: Records, 1792-1829.

The records consist of miscellaneous papers that became separated from the main body of records which passed to the LC&N. They include a copy of the articles of association with the names of the original subscribers, the 1818 lease to White, Hazard and Hauto and papers relating to the lease. Also included are a deed of William Henry and Jacob Weiss to Charles Cist for lots in Lehighton, Pennsylvania (1795), an agreement between James Greenleaf and the North American Land Company (1806) and a letter of Francis Weiss to Josiah White (1826) describing some of John Nicholson's land dealings with his father, Jacob Weiss.

Title: Account book, 1808-1845.

Records debits and credits accrued by Scolley & White and Josiah L. White for a variety of wood working activities from 1808 to 1845. Such things as setting posts in yards, shingling barns, mending roofs, fixing furniture, repairing doors, framing, "making trap doors in the mill house," building a closet, making a sink and putting it up, and constructing a loom. Mention is also made of work on sleds, window sashes, and coffins. Boards, nails, filing saws, putty, and other supplies were purchased or exchanged. The volume also features records of employees, when they worked, and how much they were paid.

The collection contains a typescript copy of the autobiography of Josiah White, describing White's apprenticeship to a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, hardware merchant; the management of White's hardware store in Philadelphia, ca. 1808; a trip to Georgia and White's opinion of slavery; the development of a waterpower site on the falls of the Schuylkill River, 1810-1819; development of the Lehigh Mine Company's anthracite coal lands, including the creation of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in 1822 and the construction of the Lehigh Cana, 1827- 1829; and the construction of the Delaware division of the Pennsylvania Canal, 1828-1832. Also contains a list of White's inventions.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963

Title: Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963

The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

The records consist of dockets and case files for equity cases heard by the Circuit Court at its sittings in Philadelphia between 1790 and 1847. A typical case file may contain some or all of the following documents: bills of complaint, answers, depositions, transcripts of testimony, exhibits, orders and reports of masters. The exhibits may include copies of original letters, minutes, contracts and accounts. Cases deal with patent infringement, libel, fraudulent misrepresentation, conspiracies in restraint of trade, violations of contracts and bankruptcy.

Papers include White's correspondence, business papers, including financial accounts, and legal and financial papers pertaining to his proposed Manual Labor Schools in Iowa and Indiana and White's journals and memoirs of White and his grandfather, Jopsiah White. In addition are letters to White family members; the journal of Margaret Ellis; the papers of Solomon White Roberts; papers of Barclay White, Daniel S. White, Elizabeth White, John J. White and Solomon White; the papers of Hannah White Richardson and Richard Richardson and the papers of Rebecca White. Principal correspondents of Josiah White include: Elizabeth White (his wife) & Mahlon Day; other correspondents include: Sarah Mapps Douglass, Edith Griffith, Eli Jones and Sybil Jones, Philadelphia Society for Organizing Charity, Ann Preston, Elizabeth Stern, William Still. Business agreements are with Erskine Hazard and George Hauto in forming the Lehigh Navigation and Coal Mine Co.

The records consist of one outbound letterpress copybook of Edwin A. Douglas, Chief Engineer & Supt. (1844-48), three outbound letterbooks of William Reed, Chief Clerk at Mauch Chunk (1852-1859), thirteen outbound letterbooks of George Ruddle, Chief Clerk, Treasurer and Real Estate Agent (1860-78) and four inbound letterbooks of George Ruddle (1870-74). The letterbooks contain the correspondence of some of the chief field officers at Mauch Chunk, much of it regular exchanges with the officers at the Philadelphia headquarters.
