Letters, 1824 March 23 - 1867 Sept. 7, the primary topic of which is the cotton trade between the U.S. and Great Britain both before and after the U.S. Civil War. One should not overlook the 1824 Mar. 23 letter from Mary, G.H., and Martha in Oxbridge, England, to Josiah Sibley in Augusta, Ga., discussing family matters; and the 1853 Sept. 19 and 1856 Nov. 5 letters from Seaborn Evans, in Liberia, to Josiah Sibley, in Augusta, which discuss the improvement of the economy and self-government in Liberia, Evans own rise in fortune, particularly in growing coffee and teaching; a massacre, 1853 July, of an English schooner crew by Africans about fifty miles north of Liberia, at Tabboo, the successful tribal warfare in 1856, and Evan's request for books to educate Africans. Most of the letters on the cotton trade are from various individuals in Liverpool, England, and the cotton that Sibley sent is discussed, as well as the cotton market in general, including the then current prices on various types and grades of cotton. All of the letters came from Baring Brothers & Co. and Guion & Co., in Liverpool. The name of the ship on which the letter was sent appear at the top left of the page.
