Grimston, Harbottle, Sir, 1603-1685. Manuscript on paper, in a single secretary hand, containing 12 speeches delivered in Parliament between November 1640 and May 1641, concerning such topics as the impeachment of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, and the issue of ship money. Speakers include John Pym, Lucius Cary, Sir Benjamin Rudyerd, Sir Edward Dering, Kildare Digby, Sir John Holland, Sir Harbottle Grimston, William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, and King Charles I, who on February 3, 1640/1 explains his desire for lenience towards "the condemned priest Goodman." The speeches are preceded by a number of essays on Parliamentary practice and rules of operation, and are followed by five satirical political verses with titles such as "Uppon the Comittment of the Lord. Archbishop of Canterbury" and "God among good Scott."

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of 16 Parliamentary speeches and treatises, many on the subject of the rights of Parliament. Speeches on this topic include one by Francis, Baron Seymour, on grievances and the rights and privileges of Parliament; one by King Charles I at the dissolution of Parliament; one by King James I to the speaker of the House of Commons, warning Parliament not to meddle in foreign affairs; and a protestation and declaration of liberties by the House of Commons upon the adjournment of Parliament in 1621. The volume also includes two treatises on the structure and practices of Parliament, and speeches by Robert Cecil, Earl of Salisbury, and Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford, on royal finances.
