Collection contains the personal correspondence and diaries of Mitchell. Diaries document his research and teaching, friendships, daily activities, prayer life and religious commitments. Correspondence consists chiefly of letters from his parents, Margaret May Hartman Mitchell and Clarence Floyd Mitchell, and other relatives, and Christmas messages from fellow Christians including several missionaries. There are also four diaries of his parents and photographs of family and friends.

On the evening of July 2, 1964, only hours after passage of the bill, on live television, President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, at the White House. He then met with prominent civil rights leaders who had attended the signing ceremony. The Act was the most far-reaching civil rights legislation since the Reconstruction era. It contained provisions to help guarantee Negroes the right to vote; to outlaw racial segregation in public facilities; to authorize the federal government to sue to desegregate public facilities and schools; to allow federal funds to be cut if programs were administered discriminatorily; to outlaw a number of employment practices based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin; and to establish a Community Relations Service to assist in resolving problems. Earlier in the afternoon, President Johnson had attended the swearing-in ceremony of General Maxwell Taylor as the newly appointed Ambassador to Vietnam and a meeting of his Cabinet in the Cabinet Room. In the evening, following a reception for eighteen Latin American ambassadors, President and Mrs. Johnson departed for the LBJ Ranch.

The Green and Mitchell papers consist of business and personal papers of these two attorneys (1805-1861). Predominant in the collection are legal papers and financial records including correspondence, court filings, subpoenas, replications, depositions, interrogatories, affidavits, agreements, mortgages, insurance contracts, assignments, estate inventories, accounts, and receipts. For several clients, their casework is documented extensively in this collection. While much of their work involved financial matters such as estate work and disputes over debt, Green and Mitchell also undertook cases involving slander, privateering awards, and military service benefits. After Green's death, Mitchell represented the Green family in a dispute with Andrew Haswell Green over Andrew's questionable dealings involving the family farm in Worcester. Personal correspondence is primarily associated with Green and his family.
