City surveyor of Washington, D.C.
Family of Nicholas King, English-born engineer and surveyor of the city of Washington, D.C., including his son-in-law, Maj. William Wade, U.S. Army ordnance officer and, later, part owner of a series of steam engine and cannon foundries in Pittsburgh, Pa., and his grandson, Nicholas King Wade, engineer and foundry owner.
Nicholas King (1771-1812), an English born surveyor and architect, the first surveyor of Washington, D.C. He was born in Yorkshire, the oldest son of Robert and Mary Clark King. His father was a prominent land surveyor. In October 1793, King and his friend Joshua John Moore, an astronomer, left for America on the Hunter, under the command of Captain John Hacker of New York. He arrived to New York in January 1794, and a month later left for Philadelphia. There he was employed by Robert Morris as a surveyor and draftsman. In 1796, he moved to Washington.

Included are: Journal of Observations and Occurences in a voyage from England to America in the year 1793 (1793, Oct. 12 -- Nov. 22, pp. 1-13); Journal in America (1794, Jan. 24 -- 1795, May, pp. 14-89); notes dated March and May 1805 (pp. 90-92); letters from Robert King (1794, Apr. 5, July 20, and Aug. 26 (pp. 92 -06); Journal Washington, D.C. In his American journal, King at length discusses American industries, agriculture, learning, mores, news, rumors, including anecdotes of Thomas Paine. and provides details of his "excursions" in New York, the Jerseys, and Pennsylvania, especially Philadelphia and Bethlehem. Also included are accounts of his encounters with Dr. Samuel Latham Mitchill, Robert Morris, and George Washington (in March 1794). King's Washington journal consists mostly of copies of his professional correspondence and notes.
