Papers of Jacob Wendell, a prominent Boston merchant, include accounts, receipts, and other business papers; materials relating to his role as one of the Mass. commissioners sent to treat with the Six Nations (Iroquois) Indians at Albany, N.Y. (1744-45); and papers on the development of Pittsfield, Mass., including plans. Account books include accounts for his work building the snow (ship) Prince of Orange (1740-44); a daybook (1813-28); and estate accounts (1716-30). There are also an account book (1748-60) and receipt book (1741-50) of Wendell's firm, Jacob, John, and Jacob Wendell. Papers of Portsmouth, N.H. merchants John (1731-1808) and George W. Wendell include letters, accounts, bills, and receipts; and papers related to real estate interests in Saville (later Wendell, now Sunapee) and Trecothick (now Ellsworth), N.H. Other papers include accounts (1827-39) and daybooks (46 vols., 1832-37) kept by Samuel Pray of Portsmouth; several letters regarding John Q. The collection also includes Pepperrell's business correspondence as a merchant, in particular with his son-in-law, Boston merchant Nathaniel Sparhawk and his partner Benjamin Colman, and regarding lands in Maine; family correspondence including with his father William; and a Pepperrell family genealogy. Records of the Louisbourg Expedition (1745) during King George's War (1744-1748) include instructions from Massachusetts governor William Shirley to the American commander William Pepperrell; correspondence with Peter Warren, commodore of the British forces; records of the proceedings of the expedition's Council of War; and copies of the Articles of Capitulation (1745) which ended the seige, with reference to adherence to the treaty. Also, an unidentified ship's log and journal and unidentified pages describing the voyage and the campaign, Pepperrell's letterbook, and papers regarding a dispute over military fees to be paid to Brig. Gen. Samuel Waldo. Among the correspondents are Benning Wentworth, Duke of Newcastle John Holles, Samuel Waldo, and Jacob Wendell.
