The Tontine Coffee-House Records consist of documentation of a business association that operated through the use of a tontine for over 80 years. The loose papers include correspondence, receipts, papers concerning the estates of Dr. John Charlton and his wife, accounting statements, records of unpaid dividends, sketches, the Tontine Constitution, lists of nominees and shareholders, wills, records of exchanges of shares, lease agreements, papers concerning heir claims to shares, property records, and declarations of trust. Bound volumes include records of minutes, accounts, share transfers, expenditures, dividend receipts, ship arrivals, and the original plan of the tontine arrangement.

Harison, Richard, 1747-1829. Richard Harison papers, 1734-[ca. 1900].

Title: Richard Harison papers, 1734-[ca. 1900].

The correspondence consists of letters from Richard Harison to his wife, Frances, 1790-1794, from his trips to Albany and one to Philadelphia. There seem to be periodic meetings with various well-known legal figures including Egbert Benson, Josiah Ogden Hoffman, Abraham Ten Broeck, Morgan Lewis, and William North, who are mentioned in the letters. Two letters from Princeton and Philadelphia, Jan.-Feb. 1794, have interesting reference to Citizen Genet. Of his wife's letters to him, from New York, sixteen were while he was in Poughkeepsie at the Constitutional Convention in 1788, and three letters, 1783-1784, were sent to him in New Jersey while she was attending to family affairs in New York during his exile from the city. The manuscripts include his commonplace book, entitled "Extracts from various authors, upon several subjects," [after 1763]-1781, and ten genealogical and biographical records from his family papers.

Much of his correspondence and other papers pertain to his extensive land holdings, once part of tracts I-III of Macomb's Purchase (now largely St. Lawrence and Franklin counties, New York) often writing to his agents in Malone and Ogdensburgh or various buyers.

Some original 18th and 19th century documents including a letter to Catharine Ludlow Ogden Hammond from her mother, S[arah] Ogden in Newark, concerning the mother's recent widowhood and other family matters, 1790; a family Bible record, 1806-1940, of the Barretts and Kortright families; an approbation (letter of introduction), November 17, 1840, for Philip Schuyler, who was a United States Consul at Liverpool and part of a commission "...to assist their subjects and people in their commerce and traffick there...," signed by Queen Victoria and Lord Palmerston; marriage certificates of Louis Phillippe de Luze and Sarah Ogden, Trinity Church, New York, 1821, and Arthur Mackie Foley and Sarah Alice de Luze, St. Mark's Church, New York, 1878 or 1879; and manuscript and typescript copies of 18th and 19th century wills, marriage certificates, and other legal documents. Of note are ca. 20 letters, ca. 1771-1828, received by Richard Harison of New York attorney-at-law, concerning family, business, and general matters. A few letters are addressed to Jane Harison, and one is from Richard Harison to his mother.

Of note are a letter to Richard Harison from his colleague Alexander Hamilton, Sept. 13, 1792, and a receipt from him, January 10? 1804, and a character reference for William Harison from DeWitt Clinton, May 16, 1825. Includes two printed pamphlets: A description of Trenton Falls, Oneida County, New York, by John Sherman ( Utica, N.Y., 1827), and The Rath, or Burmese Imperial State Carriage (London, 1825).

They include: deeds, leases, accounts, legal opinions (including one by Cadwallader Colden) and other documents relating to the Tontine Coffee-House and the land on which it stood; agreements with Ebenezer Storer and Edward Bardin, tenants of the coffee-house at different times; documents relating to the adjoining property, 120 Water Street; a sketch by John McComb of the Bar Room of the Tontine Coffee-House, and a section of the Coffee Room, with his estimate for proposed alterations; lists of nominees; assignments of shares; three copies of The Constitution and Nominations of the Subscribers to the Tontine Coffee-House (New-York: Printed in the Year 1796), one bearing the signature of Frederic de Peyster and annotated with dates of death of nominees; papers and accounts relating to the estate of George Bright; papers, accounts, and legal opinons (by Richard Harison, John Wells, William Slosson, and Peter Van Schaack) relating to the affairs of John Charlton, his widow Mary, and their respective estates, including some bills for her funeral expenses; an invitation card for a dinner held at the Tontine Coffee-House in 1796 by the Lieutenant Governor. Many of the papers were written by Frederick de Peyster or his son Frederic.
