Wilson, David E. David E. Wilson letters, 1849-1855.
Title:
David E. Wilson letters, 1849-1855.
Includes thirty-two letters written by Wilson chiefly to his mother, Rachel Wilson, in Maryland and brother (Bill?) concerning his travels and mining ventures. One of these letters concerns his experiences in Panama and, after sailing on the bark Equator, another while in San Francisco, Calif. The remaining letters largely detail Wilson's mostly unsuccessful experiences with mining and speculation, general views of mining life and its hardships, and the towns and camps where he lived, chiefly in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties. These include Columbia and other places along the Tuolumne River, as well as lesser-known camps, such as Don Pedro's Bar, Paine's Bar, and Curtisville. Some of the letters contain mostly negative comments on the Mexicans, Chinese, and Indians (including Mercedes) who live and work in these places, which reflect the views of the time. Also, in one letter, June 8, 1852, Wilson describes a bull and bear fight which had occurred in Columbia, and another letter from June 22, 1854, he writes of the rise and fall of the town of Algerine Camp. In addition, he includes a sketch map of the area, June 1, 1850. Also includes four letters of introduction written on Wilson's behalf (one of which is addressed to Gen. Persifor F. Smith) prior to his arrival in Calif., as well as a Mar. 9, 1851, letter from Wm. H. Gilpin concerning a ticket for passage from San Francisco to New York which awaits Wilson.

Rumfield, Hiram S. Letters, 1849-1866.
Title:
Letters, 1849-1866.
This collection of correspondence includes numerous descriptive letters written by Rumfield to his wife as he traveled West in conjunctions with his job. In addition to his concerns about his wife's domestic responsibilities, Rumfield described the relations between the Indians, the western settlers, and the Overland Mail Company. He related several experiences, including the effects of a Texas drought, fears about Civil War conflicts (he was in Springfield, Mo., at the time of the Battle of Wilson's Creek), Indian massacres, and other local events as he traveled through Fort Smith, Ark., Fort Fillmore, N.M., Salt Lake City, Utah, and Nevada. Rumfield provided extensive details about the Mormon faith and way of life in Salt Lake City. Included in the collection is an extensive letter describing a service at the Tabernacle and the sermons, including one by Brigham Young (1801-1877). Rumfield's letters also detailed the conflict between Utah governor Stephen Selwyn Harding (1808-1891) and the Mormons. Also included in this collection is an 1850 letter regarding a sawmill business proposition in Oregon, several letters of introduction for Rumfield, some business correspondence for the Overland Mail Company, and an 1849 printed circular concerning the establishment of an overland mail route to Oregon and California. It is signed by William Gilpin (1822-1894), later governor of Colorado.
