Letters written to Taylor when a student at the University of Virginia and prisoner at Johnson's Island, Lake Erie constitute the bulk of the collections. Others were written by him from Radford, Montgomery Co., where he had gone to practice law. Most of the letters contain family news. Those from the Civil War concern efforts of Taylor's northern relatives, the Coolidge family, to have him paroled. The collection also contains a biography of Taylor by his daughter Patsy Jefferson Taylor, a Colston family genealogy, and a joint memorial to Jane Hollins Randolph and Meriwether Lewis Randolph.

Commonplace book contains sentimental poetry and eulogies to friends interspersed with brief messages of love to Frank Anderson Kinckel and several notes on family events including the marriage of her sister Anna L. Daniel to Merriwether Lewis Randolph. Two poems were inspired by vacations at Old Point Comfort, 1886, 1887. The volume also includes a tribute to Jefferson Davis, 1889, and an essay "Bars to matrimony, the reasons why some persons should not marry & the evils of improvident unions," 1889, including hereditary diseases, poverty, religious differences, incongruity of temper, and lack of affection. Several flowers are pressed between the pages.
