Title: Papers, 1646 (1696-1745) 1830.

Personal correspondence of Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740), an officer in the British Army and later Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, 1710-1722. The bulk of the correspondence is between Spotswood and cousin John Spotswood [sic] [Spotiswood] (1667-1728), of Edinburgh, concerning the Spotswood family and Alexander's career, and including a discussion of the political and social conditions in colonial Virginia. Included in the correspondence is a letter, 1744, from the Rev. Robert Rose, a close friend of the Lieutenant Governor's and later one of his executors, containing a biographical sketch of Spotswood; a draft of a letter, 1746, from John Spotswood, Jr., to Rose, with a genealogy of the Spotswood family; and a British Army commission for Maj. George Spotswood, 1830. Persons mentioned include William Gooch, William Cocke, John Browne, Andrew Thompson, William Robertson, George Wythe, Archibald Campbell, Archibald Blair, Alexander Kerr, and Robert Spotswood.
