The collection consists of six indentures, pertaining to various Athens, Georgia people as follows: 1.) Manuel T. Kendrick sells to Albin P. Dearing part of lot 89 in Athens, price "tract of land and $125" cash, signed by M. T. Kendrick, witnessed by F. B. Lucas and S. J. Mays, Notary Public, dated January 4, 1869; 2.) Ferdinand Phinizy sells to Manuel T. Kendrick part of lots 88 and 89, price $500, signed by Ferdinand Phinizy, witnessed by A. T. Luckie and S. J. Mays, Notary Public, dated August 15, 1867; 3.) Ferdinand Phinizy sells to Manuel T. Kendrick part of lot 89, price $900, signed by Ferdinand Phinizy, witnessed by James D. Pittard and Jos. T. Sansom, J. S. C., dated May 31, 1866; 4.) Albin Dearing sells to Ferdinand Phinizy part of lot 88, price $700, signed by Albin P. Dearing, witnessed by James T. Sansom and Jos. D. Pittard, J. P., dated April 28, 1866; 5.) William L. Mitchell, Executor of Robert Taylor, sells to Albin P. Dearing lots 91, 96 and 97 in Thomas Survey of the College lands, price $845, signed by Wm. L. Mitchell, Executor of Robert Taylor witnessed by W. W. Lumpkin, D. H. Alexander, and John Kilpatrick, J. P., dated January 17, 1863; 6.) Memorandum of Agreement between A. P. Dearing and M. T. Kendrick RE a tract of land exchanged (no. 1 in this collection), that Kendrick can retain possession of the house and garden for present year, etc. etc., signed January 4, 1869 by... further notes on reverse indicate Kendrick agreed to relinquish the house and garden March 15, 1869, signed February 5, 1869 by Kendrick.

Title: Mitchell family papers, 1826-1945.

The collection consists of miscellaneous material, including several masonic documents of William L. Mitchell's, several letters of recommendation for William L. Mitchell including ones by Moses Waddel and Henry Jackson, class notebooks and calligraphic exercises of Henry B. Mitchell, sketches, poetry, and a variety of family-related manuscript materials. There are also two small photograph albums of family members (most unidentified) with one containing several carte-de-visites of Confederate military leaders. In addition, there is an unidentified tintype of an African American woman in striking Asian attire.

Mitchell, William Letcher, 1805-1882. William Letcher Mitchell papers, 1823-1929.

Title: William Letcher Mitchell papers, 1823-1929.

Chiefly correspondence relating to Mitchell and Neisler family affairs, and to William Letcher Mitchell's various business and civic activities, including his law practice; the construction of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, including use of slave and convict labor; affairs of the University of Georgia; and local social and Presbyterian Church affairs. Civil War materials include letters from Confederate soldiers, some serving as chaplains, and family letters, mostly from women, discussing life on the home front and rumors of military actions. There are scattered letters, 1870-1882, from Albert Pike, concerning the Masons. Later papers are those of William's daughter, Frances Letcher Mitchell, mainly relating to her research on and publication of the book, "Georgia Land and People" (Atlanta, 1893). Also included is her 1875 household affairs and recipe book.

The collection consists of papers of William Montague Browne of Athens, Georgia from 1864-1880. The papers consist of correspondence mainly from Browne to Howell Cobb Jr. and William L. Mitchell containing mostly family news and financial dealings. The collection also contains a letter (1864) from Mary Ann Cobb to Howell Cobb and another to Browne regarding Union troops near Athens, an address (1882) by Browne to the Superior Court memorializing the late Dr. William L. Mitchell, and an extract from the minutes of a faculty meeting at the University of Georgia also regarding Mitchell.

Title: William L. Mitchell family papers, 1819-1901.

The collection consists of papers of William Letcher Mitchell and the Mitchell family of Athens, Georgia from 1819-1901. The papers mainly contain correspondence, but also include reports (1875-1880) from the University of Georgia (UGA). The correspondence contains information on Mitchell's law practice; his tenure on the Board of Trustees at UGA; Georgia politics; as well as his involvement with the Athens Presbyterian Church, the UGA University High School (Athens, Georgia), and the Athens division of the Scottish Rite Masonic order. Correspondents include Herschel V. Johnson, Charles Colcock Jones, Andrew A. Lipscomb, John Letcher, Henry H. Tucker, and Boykin Wright. After Mitchell's death in 1882, the correspondence is addressed to Frances L. Mitchell.

Mitchell, William L., (William Letcher), 1805-1882. Alonzo Church memoir, 1865; 1976.

Title: Alonzo Church memoir, 1865; 1976.

The collection consists of a memoir of Alonzo Church, D. D. (1793-1862) minister and former president of the University of Georgia, was written by William L. Mitchell for Reverend John S. Wilson and the Presbyterian Synod of Georgia on 20 September 1865, as part of the Synod's project "to prepare a memorial record of each one of the ministerial members who have departed this life since the erection of the Synod." Included in this collection is a Xerox of an early typescript of the original, a recent typescript, copy of a cover letter to Dr. E. M. Coulter, and note from Dr. Coulter pertaining to the memoir. This memoir, although somewhat fragmentary, is an important record of the life of Alonzo Church, his university policies and administration, and, by inference, Athens during the antebellum period.
