Title: Resolutions regarding the lottery, 1777 February 26.

Resolutions given at Baltimore, Md. concerning interest rates on Loan Office rates and Continental lottery prizes, issued by John Hancock, President of Congress. On the front of the document is written a list, dated 1782 January 8, of the owners of the Brigte Chasmarie, and the amount of shares they own. The list includes Captain Samuel Smith, Robert Morris, Preston Reed, Charles Pettit, John Cox, William Shippen, Philip Moore, B. McClenachen, and several others (illegible). On the back of the document is written a list, dated 1779 January 4, of men purchasing Bills of Exchange on France through the agency of Mr. Wm. Trumbull, and the amount each paid. The list includes the same men in addition to Thomas Bond, Sharpe Delaney, William Smith, Joseph Bullock, George Campbell, Joseph Reed, and others (illegible). Written at Philadelphia, Penn.

Consisting of letters, 8 Jan. 1829, Washington, D.C., to David R. Evans, re settlement of Hugh Milling's claims, the improbability of relief from the tariff, and speculation on Pres. Andrew Jackson's cabinet; 3 Feb. 1829, Washington City, to Gov. [Stephen Decatur] Miller, Stateburg, S.C., expressing regret at defeat of [Josiah] Evans and mentioning Jackson's expected arrival in Washington, but "As to his cabinet there is nothing beyond conjecture." Letter, 18 June 1830, York, S.C., to Gov. Miller, Plain Hill, re Miller's tenuous position as governor, uncertainty of Smith's election to S.C. legislature and political ambitions of Langdon Cheves, Daniel Elliott Huger, James Louis Petigru, and Robert Woodward Barnwell, questioning Cheves' eligibility to serve since declaring himself a resident of Pennsylvania, noting that "Jackson ... has struck a fatal blow to the [in]ternal improvement system; and ... the Tariff I think will go with it unless the magnanimity of the South should arrange otherwise," and commenting re George McDuffie's opposition to the tariff system but and support for internal improvements.

Title: Stephen Decatur Miller papers, 1821-1834.

Papers consist of correspondence, legal documents, financial records, and other items. Correspondence chiefly consists of letters to Miller concerning state and national political issues. Topics include states rights, tariffs and an anti-tariff convention, James Hamilton's possible candidacy for the office of governor in South Carolina, candidates for the office of state attorney general, state militia affairs, state road laws, vice-presidential and presidential elections, William Smith, Miller's candidacy for the U.S. Senate, free trade organizations, nullification, secession, John C. Calhoun, conflicts between Miller and James Blair, and other matters. A letter (1828) from William Haynesworth relates a resolution made by a legislative committee nominating Miller as a candidate for governor of South Carolina; another letter (15 September 1830) from Moses M. Benbow inquires about reports that an agent of South Carolina was sent to England "for the purpose of securing the assistance of Great Britain in a war with the Northern States." Correspondents include William Smith, J.D. Witherspoon, Franklin I. Moses, P.E. Pearson, John Gallatin Bowman, W.L. Pinckney, and many others. Letters are from Charleston (S.C.), Sumpterville (Sumter, S.C.), and elsewhere to Stephen D. Miller in Stateburg (S.C.), at Plane Hill Plantation (S.C.), and in Washington (D.C.). Financial records mostly pertain to plantation affairs and include receipts; bills for plantation supplies, blacksmithing, and other goods and services; promissory notes; a mortgage (1827) on land in Lancaster District; and accounts for sales of cotton, with related correspondence including letters from Parker & Brailsford regarding cotton sales, requests for payment on accounts, and other financial matters. Legal documents mainly consist of court writs (Sumter District) to sheriffs to levy sums against debtors. Other items include a speech (ca. 1830); petitions; and a newspaper clipping (n.d.) of a suggested secession ordinance.
