James Mason Hutchings was born in 1824 in England. At sixteen years old he traveled to New Orleans and worked as a clerk in a business house there. When he heard about the gold discovery, he left New Orleans in April of 1849, determined to satisfy his craving for adventure by taking the overland route. He arrived at the "gold-diggings" on October 9, 1849. He mined, made his fortune, and lost it all when the San Francisco bank, Frank Ward & Co., failed. He then returned to mining. In 1853, Hutchings published a letter sheet called "The Miner's Ten Commandments" which became wildly popular among California's early settlers. In 1856, aided by his newfound wealth, Hutchings began publishing "Hutching's Illustrated California Magazine", a monthly magazine dedicated to promoting the natural wonders and beauty of California. The magazine was published until June 1861, when it merged with the "California Mountaineer". After relinquishing his role as editor and proprietor of his magazine, Hutchings settled in the Yosemite and opened the hotel known as the "Hutchings House". In 1880, Hutchings was elected "Guardian of the Valley."
Hutchings was a pioneer to California and an author of books about that state.
James Mason Hutchings was a pioneer to Calif. in 1849 and an author of many books about Calif.
Author, editor, and publisher.

Title:
Autobiography and Reminiscence of James Mason Hutchings, San Francisco, 1901.
Autobiographies and Reminiscences of California Pioneers, p.5-11, Vol. 2. This is a typed transcript of the member's autobiographical reminiscence created as an institutional record for the Society of California Pioneers. The transcription includes a reference to a photograph of the member in a set of bound volumes. This reminiscence begins with some background information regarding Hutchings' childhood in England. It then describes his motivation for moving to New Orleans and his passion for adventure, which inspired his overland journey to California. The reminiscence provides details concerning Hutchings life as a miner as well as his early business pursuits. It also describes how he came to write the famous "Miners Ten Commandments", a letter sheet of which more than 97 thousand copies were sold. Some mention is made of Hutchings' conflict with the U.S. Government over his right to settle in land that became part of Yosemite National Park. The years covered by this reminiscence are roughly 1840 to 1880.

Title:
Photographs of the Middle Fork of the American River and Forest Hill, the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Big Trees, Coloma and Placerville [graphic]. Oct. 1858-July 1859.
This collection, formerly housed in the Arthur S. Rosenblatt scrapbook, consists of 26 views of mining districts in California's gold country, 17 views of Yosemite, and 5 views of trees in sequoia groves or other forests. To these have been added 3 later copy photographs; 1 of a mining scene and 2 of Yosemite. The mining district views are chiefly from the Middle Fork of the American River, with several of Forest Hill in Placer County. These were made by Weed in October 1858 while employed by Robert H. Vance, and they were collectively promoted as Vance's "American River panorama" (cf. Palmquist, Pioneer photographers of the far west, 2000.) The views taken near Coloma and Placerville may be from different photographic trips. The Yosemite views are considered the first photographs taken in Yosemite Valley and environs. They were taken between June 18 and June 22, 1859, on an excursion described by J.M. Hutchings in his Hutchings California magazine (Oct.-Dec. 1859). At the time of creation, they were known as the "Yosemite Panorama".

The Society of California Pioneers collection of autobiographies and reminiscences of early pioneers, 1900-1904
Title:
The Society of California Pioneers collection of autobiographies and reminiscences of early pioneers 1900-1904
The Autobiographies and Reminiscences are made up of 153 documents varying in length from one page to over sixty pages, the average being around five pages in length. Most include details from the writer's early life, but the bulk of each document tends to be their overland journeys or voyages to the Pacific Coast and California in pre-Gold Rush times and then accounts of their lives after arrival. Many of the writer's - all are men - talk of their families, education, occupations before and after arriving out West, as well as experiences mining, businesses, farming and ranching. Other aspects of their new lives are discussed: law and politics, the military and wars, social events, agriculture, literature and theater, shipping and leisure activities. The time period covered by the accounts is from the 1840s through 1904 - when the project was completed. The geographic location discussed range from all over the United States: New England, New York, the south, the Midwest - especially Missouri - and of course locations along both the overland trails to the West, as well as ports of call in South and Central America. Many accounts are looking back at their lives, and some are accurate and others may or may not be embellished as the writer relates a life some fifty or sixty years earlier.

McCaull, Peter. Peter McCaull letter : Sacramento City, Calif., to brothers, 1858 June 15.
Title:
Peter McCaull letter : Sacramento City, Calif., to brothers, 1858 June 15.
Three page handwritten letter from a miner to his brothers, written on pictorial lettersheet, on two different days, June 15 and June 17, 1858. Describes the miner's daily life and experiences as the need for labor is diminishing in the declining days of the Gold Rush including the amounts paid him for laboring ($60 dollars per month), the prospects of a gold find on the Frasers River in Hudson Bay (British possession) that has encouraged other miners to leave California, and his plans to go to Placerville to secure work. The miner also describes ways he sought to save money by rooming with another man where they fixed their own food, and did their own laundry except for his "fine socks" which he gave to "Chinamen to wash, price $3 per doz." "Hutchings' California scenes. --- Methods of mining" (Baird, J.A. California's pictorial letter sheets, 1849-1869, 107; gray laid paper). 12 engraved vignettes of various mining procedures and equipment with explanatory text. A sidebar lists the names of mining localities. Pictorial engravings include miners at work and depictions of equipment including a Guyaskutus, a gold saving machine invented by Joseph Patterson. Four of the scenes are signed by noted California Gold Rush artist Charles Nahl and engraved by T.C. Boyd. At bottom of sheet: "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1855 by James M. Hutchings, in the Clerk's office of the U.S. District Court for California. Address J F Larrabee. San Francisco. Printed by Hanna & Co."

The Chinese in California, 1850-1925
Title:
The Chinese in California 1850-1925
The Chinese in California, 1850-1925 illustrates nineteenth and early twentieth century Chinese immigration to California through about 8,000 images and pages of primary source materials. Included are photographs, original art, cartoons and other illustrations; letters, excerpts from diaries, business records, and legal documents; as well as pamphlets, broadsides, speeches, sheet music, and other printed matter. These documents describe the experiences of Chinese immigrants in California, including the nature of inter-ethnic tensions. They also document the specific contributions of Chinese immigrants to commerce and business, architecture and art, agriculture and other industries, and cultural and social life in California. Chinatown in San Francisco receives special treatment as the oldest and largest community of Chinese in the United States. Also included is documentation of smaller Chinese communities throughout California, as well as material reflecting on the experiences of individuals. Although necessarily selective, such a large body of materials presents a full spectrum of representation and opinion. The materials in this online compilation are drawn from collections at The Bancroft Library, University of California Berkeley; The Ethnic Studies Library, University of California Berkeley; and The California Historical Society, San Francisco.
