Schaffer, Matt. Matt Schaffer collection, 1969-1992 (bulk 1969-1970).
Title:
Matt Schaffer collection, 1969-1992 (bulk 1969-1970).
The collection consists of the papers of Matt Schaffer from 1969-1970. The papers include original audiotape interviews conducted by Matt Schaffer in 1969-1970 with a number of poets, dramatists, and novelists associated with the cultural life of Dakar, Senegal. Among those represented are the following Senegalese, Martinique, French Guyanese, and Haitian writers: Ibrahima Ba, Moctar Bow, Aime Cesaire, Gerard Chenet, Leon-Gontran Damas, Amadou Cisse Dia, Lamine Diakhate, Bertine Juminer, Doura Mane, Felix Morisseau-Leroy, Eunice N'Daye, Ousmane Sembene, Leopold Sedar Senghor, Maurice Senghor, Ousman Soce, Paulin Vieyra, and Joseph Zobel. Also present is a single audiotape interview with the French novelist Jean-Paul Sartre. A translation by Schaffer of an interview with Annette Mbaye d'Erneville is included, although the actual interview is not included in the collection. These interviews were conducted in French and, with the exception of the N'Daye and Sartre tapes, were roughly transcribed by Matt Schaffer. In 2005, a Robert W. Woodruff Library Fellow transcribed and translated all the interviews. In addition, the collection also includes transcripts of a number of talks delivered at the All-African Cultural Festival held in Algiers in 1969, as well as a small amount of related printed material. The collection also includes a small collection of ephemera published by the Georgia printer William Haynes at the Ashantilly Press.

Helen Armstead-Johnson miscellaneous theater collections, 1831-1993.
The Helen Armstead-Johnson Miscellaneous Theater Collections (HAJMTC) are formed by over two hundred file-folder level collections (1 to 3 file folders per personality/event). The collections contain information dating from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century documenting early dramatic actors, minstrel shows, vaudeville, musical revues, 1920s and 30s Broadway productions, the protest dramas of the 1940s and 50s, plays that came out of the Black Arts Movement of the late 60s and 70s, and theatrical productions of the 1980s and 90s. In addition to actors, playwrights, singers, musicians, and dancers (classical and popular) (e.g. Ira Frederick Aldridge, Eubie Blake and Katherine Dunham), and the productions they appeared in, there are collections for poets, and visual and plastic artists. There are eighteen collections documenting performers of the 19th century; twenty-nine collections covering the period 1900-1919; thirty-seven collections document the 1940s-1950s; and eleven collections for the 1980s and 1990s. The bulk of the collections cover the two most productive periods for black theater: ninety-two collections for the 1920s through the 1930s, and ninety collections representative of the Black Arts Movement.

David A. Morse Papers 1895-2003. 1942-1990
Title:
David A. Morse Papers 1895-2003. 1942-1990
The David A. Morse Papers document the life and times of David Abner Morse (1907-1990), American lawyer, soldier, and public official. While he distinguished himself in legal, military, and governmental circles, the most fruitful years of his life were spent at the helm of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the oldest member of the United Nations' family of specialized agencies. As Director-General of the International Labour Office in Geneva from 1948 to 1970, Morse guided the increasingly complex activities of this tripartite organization, which unites in one body the representatives of workers, governments, and employers. No one has had a longer tenure as its head, and no one has presided over such far-reaching changes in its composition and orientation. Drawing on a variety of experiences in the field of domestic and international labor, including appointments as Assistant, Under, and Acting Secretary of Labor in the Truman administration, Morse gave practical meaning in a postwar context to the ILO's underlying philosophy, namely, that "universal and lasting peace can be established only if it is based upon social justice." The pursuit of this object won for the ILO the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969. The David Morse Papers contain correspondence, reports, memoranda, photographs, and newspaper clippings that document this long, productive career.

Robert Freeman papers, 1950-1993, 1955-1963
Title:
Robert Freeman papers 1950-1993 1955-1963
A notable pioneer of the life insurance industry in Africa, Robert Turner Freeman, Jr. was born on April 25, 1918 in New York City and graduated from Lincoln University in 1941. In 1945 he entered the life insurance industry as the vice-president and actuary for United Mutual Life Insurance, an African-American insurance company. Eleven years later he and two lawyer friends, Vertner W. Tandy, Jr. and David Jones, established the Gold Coast (later Ghana) Insurance Company. The Gold Coast Insurance Company recruited twenty-five insurance agents - the first in the colony - and gave them a two-week training course. By 1959, the company was 150 - strong and branch offices had been opened in other major Ghanaian cities. That same year, Freeman and Tandy also formed the Ghana General Insurance Company to sell automobile and fire insurance. It was the first domestic property and casualty company in Ghana. In 1962, the two flourishing companies were incorporated into Ghana's newly-formed State Insurance Corporation under Freeman's leadership. Freeman and his partner's innovative efforts in life insurance in Ghana drew interest from other African nations and Freeman's insurance career in Africa would include actuarial and legal consultation for insurance corporations in Liberia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and South Africa among others. Freeman died on January 10, 2001 in Washington, D.C. The Robert Freeman Papers document Freeman's career as a pioneer of the life insurance industry in Ghana, and to some degree Nigeria. The papers are divided into Personal and Professional papers. The latter consist mainly of business correspondence with some financial documents pertaining especially to the Ghana Insurance, Ghana General Insurance, and Great Nigeria Insurance companies. The scanty personal record includes a few letters to family and associates, curriculum vitae, a biographical sketch, a file on Pauli Murray and clippings about Kwame Nkrumah. The folder on Murray contains a travelogue of her experiences in Ghana and other countries, a letter reflecting on non-violence and women's liberation among other things, and an unpublished paper "The Law as it Affects Desegregation.".
