The correspondence and business papers of Dr. Solomon Henkel comprise the bulk of the collection. His medical and pharmaceutical practice is the chief topic. There are accounts and correspondence with Baltimore and Philadelphia druggists as well as letters from patients describing symptoms and requesting treatment. A letter re: the construction of an electrifying machine for "rheumatick" complaints and one from Peachy Harrison asking for smallpox vaccine to prevent an anticipated outbreak in Harrisonburg are of interest. There is also considerable correspondence re his printing and bookselling business including several letters from Philadelphia publisher, Mathew Carey. Letters to Henkel as New Market postmaster request new routes and offices. Also include papers of other family members, particularly David and Moses Henkel. Topics often concern the Lutheran Church, doctrinal controversy, denominational differences and potential mergers, church conferences, printings and translations of religious works, and mission travel. Of interest are the objections of a Tennessee committee to the constitution of the general synod, a description of missionary work among the Wiandot Indians of Ohio, letters from Daniel Bryan seeking support in an upcoming election, and a ficticious account of a first century German Jew who travels to Palestine and witnesses the events of Holy Week.
