Collection includes: declaration of war of the Sloop Andrigo, of Salem, to the French private sloop, Le Brilliant, dated 1759; journal for the Privateer America, dated 1814-1815, listing vessels captured by the America and the ship John along with articles of agreement between the owners and crew; a deposition and protest, dated 1811, by the crew of the Brig Nabby, stating its unseaworthiness, the cargo thrown overboard and the sale of the vessel; nine hand-drawn charts tracking the 1817 voyage of the Brig Ceres from Salem to Sumatra; journal kept on board the Privateer John James; a sketch of a sundial; late 18th century correspondence and documents written by Captain J. P. Felt of Salem, including the formation of the Salem Marine Society, providing a list of its members and list of American privateers outfitted during the Revolutionary War; handwritten contemporary narrative of the loss of the HMS L. Hector written in a letter to the Secretary of the Admiralty, dated 1782; typed transcript listing ships owned by the Crowninshield family; plus an assortment of miscellaneous maritime documents, some of which are written in foreign languages and several of which pertain to Josiah Orne.
