Correspondence, letters, notes, genealogical findings, family history research, and photographs relating to the Lee and Rust family members whose ancestors immigrated to the U.S. in the mid-17th century, settled in New England, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Midwest; became landed gentry, military officers, professional businessmen, and leading citizens in the 18th and 19th centuries and modern day industrialists. Family members represented include Hancock Lee (1797-1860), James Kendall Lee (1829-1861), George Rust, Jr., and E. Marshall Rust, Jr. (1879-1946). Includes photographs of various Rust family members, including Col. Armistead Thomson Mason Rust (1820-1887), Ida Lee Rust (1840-1921), and Edward Jennings Rust (1797-1877) and historical and genealogical data compiled by E. Marshall Rust which resulted in his book, Rust of Virginia (1940). Correspondence includes letters of recommendation concerning political appointments to Thomas Hart Benton, James Buchanan, Jefferson Davis, Andrew Jackson, Franklin Pierce, and James K. Polk. Other topics include family and social life in antebellum Richmond, Va., national and Virginia politics, and the educational experiences of James Kendall Lee as a student at Princeton College in the 1820s.
