This collection includes bills, letters, envelopes, a photograph from the Cliff House (Ogunquit, Me.), programs for the Ogunquit Art Association July 1938 exhibition, a book, and a magazine. The bills are for various stores such as Cummings Bros., Island Falls Grange Store, and Kiley & Hughes motor goods for L.J. Irish. The letters are written to Irish from the Rubber Scrubber Co. or to the Rubber Scrubber Co. asking about a Maine or New England distributor. There are two envelopes addressed to Mrs. Jean I. Weare; the rest are to the Travelers Insurance Co. The programs, book, and magazine have no obvious connection to the Irishes or Weares. That is, they are not mentioned within the pages.

Chapman, Russell Comstock, 1896-1984. Russell C. Chapman World War I collection, 1909-1928.

Title: Russell C. Chapman World War I collection, 1909-1928.

Russell Comstock Chapman, a native of Hartford, Connecticut, served in World War I as part of the Machine Gun Company, 23rd U.S. Infantry, A.E.F. Most of the papers are military correspondence and related items, such as maps of France, trench orders, and military appointments. There are also a few published pieces, including the Infantry Soldier's Handbook. Chapman's early life in Hartford is evidenced by the certificate appointing him Corporal (at age 13) of the Asylum Hill Cadets at the West District School. Later he worked for Travelers Insurance. Correspondence from that time is also within the collection. Other certificates include Chapman's membership in the University of Maine's Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter. One item is labeled as an 1838 coin. A four leaf clover good luck charm that was sent to Chapman may also be found. Highly valuable to the collection is a note written by Chapman in 1976 explaining the circumstances surrounding some of the material.

Materials about the Swartout family saw mill machinery business in Three Rivers, Michigan, include advertisements for saw mill machinery (some illustrated); stock certificate; insurance policy, 1880's. Wade L. Swartout military papers, 1887-1898. Swartout served with the Michigan State Troops which became the Michigan National Guard. Photocopies of letters by Wade L. Swartout, May 19, 1898-August 30, 1898, describe his experiences during the Spanish-American War in training camps and in Cuba with Michigan 33rd Volunteers, Company K.A Cuban document about military volunteers, May, 1898 (no translation). John S. Barry family papers include letters by Charles H. Barry, Constantine, Michigan; deeds for property in St. Joseph County, Michigan, mostly relevant to the settling of John S. Barry's estate; an April 17, 1875, manuscript copy of the 1866 will of John S. Barry, Constrantine. John S. Barry was Governor of Michigan, 1841-1845, 1850-1851. One hundred photographs include Constantine and Spanish-American War. A photocopy of a book about the Spanish-American War, Michigan Brigade, by Lieutenant Frederick J. Brown, 1893, illustrated. Louisiana lottery tickets, 1886-1888.

Title: Travelers Insurance records of the 1917 Atlanta fire, 1917, undated

This collection contains documents pertaining to the 1917 Atlanta fire and subsequent property damage suffered by Travelers Insurance policy holders. Correspondence includes letters and telegrams between Travelers Insurance and the Cliff C. Hatcher Insurance Agency and Haas & Company. This correspondence discusses insurance policies affected by the fire. There are two legal-sized lists of affected policy holders including their addresses, loan numbers, policy numbers, mortgage amounts, insurance amounts, and associated underwriter companies. Also included is the report prepared and written by the National Board of Fire Underwriters, Committee on Fire Prevention, entitled "Report on the Atlanta Conflagration of May 21, 1917." This report includes details on the origin of the fire, its progress through the city, contributing weather conditions, the response of the fire department and other aid, and the resulting damage after the fire was extinguished. The report also includes fifteen images of the fire, both during and after the event, as well as a map outlining the area consumed by the fire and associated fire incidents in Atlanta on May 21, 1917.

John Emery Morris' collection of daybooks, scrapbooks, insurance rate information, grocery account books, bank books, and household expense books. The daybooks record both personal and professional accounts. Morris worked his way from clerk to assistant secretary of the Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford. He was married to Mary Pamelia Felt. The couple had three children, Henry Lincoln, Edward Bontecou, and John Felt. John Emery Morris died in 1911.

<p>Floyd B. McKissick (1922-1991) was born in Asheville, N.C. He was an attorney, businessman, and civil rights leader. McKissick married Evelyn Williams, with whom he had four children: Joycelyn; Andree; Floyd, Jr.; and Charmaine. The collection contains materials documenting Floyd B. McKissick's work as an lawyer, businessman, and civil rights leader. Included are items pertaining to his law practice in Durham, N.C.; his service, beginning in 1966, as national director of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE); his work as advisor to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and his interests in politics and education. Many items relate to Soul City, N.C., a town owned and operated by African Americans near Warrenton, N.C. Included are items describing the impact of Soul City on rural Warren County, N.C., and Vance County, N.C. Among the companies documented are McKissick Enterprises of New York and North Carolina; City Development, Inc.; HealthCo, Inc.; Madison and McKissick Development, Inc.; McKissick S.C. Associates; the Soul City Foundation and other Soul City companies; and the Warren Regional Planning Corporation. There are also a few items relating to the McKissick family and to his affiliation with the Republican Party at the local, state, and national levels.</p> <p>Collection is jointly held by Southern Historical Collection of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the African American Resources Collection of North Carolina Central University.</p>
