The correspondence of James and Richard Bayard forms the bulk of the collection. Topics include Federalist politics, the repeal of the Judiciary Act of 1800, the recharter of the first Bank of the United States, the War of 1812, and foreign affairs. James Bayard's letters, written while he was a part of the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Ghent, are of special importance. Richard Bayard's correspondence deals with Delaware politics, the Bank of the United States, and diplomatic relations with Belgium while he served in the American Embassy in Brussels. Also included are diplomatic documents; reports concerning the U.S. and British navies; printed texts of speeches given by both men in Congress; presidential election materials (1801); and genealogical material on the Bayard family.
