The lawyer and antiquarian Benjamin Ropes Nichols was born on 18 May 1786 to Capt. Ichabod (1749-1839) and Lydia Ropes (1754-1835) Nichols, members of two of Salem's most prominent families. In 1800, he entered Harvard College, where a brother, Ichabod (class of 1802), and cousin, Benjamin Peirce (1778-1831, class of 1801), had already distinguished themselves as scholars. Benjamin, too, graduated with distinction in 1804.

After graduation, Nichols returned to Salem to practice law. During a brief tenure there as county clerk, he organized and 'renovated' the town's records and was later employed by the State to organize the records of Plymouth Colony. In 1813, he married Mary Pickering (1793-1863) of Salem, with whom he had several children, including at least one set of twins.

In 1824, the Nichols moved to Boston to further his career. There he earned a reputation as a skillful financier and as clerk of the Boston and Providence and Boston and Lowell Railroad Corporations. His deep interest in historical (antiquarian) matters flourished in Boston and earned his election to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1829. Nichols died on 30 April 1848.

The Pickering Family Papers include business, legal, and personal papers of five generations of the Pickering family of Salem, Massachusetts. Approximately half the papers belong to Colonel Timothy Pickering (1745-1829), a prominent statesman. Many others belong to his son John Pickering (1777-1846), a lawyer and gifted linguist and scholar. Also represented in the collection are personal and business papers of thirteen other family members. In addition, papers of Pickering relatives and in-laws are included in the collection. These papers document the evolution of a family in Salem from modest beginnings as skilled laborers and farmers to a distinguished, successful family, whose members have included statesmen, scholars, lawyers, and merchants.

Daughter of George Crowninshield and his mistress, Elizabeth Roswell. The bulk of the collection consists of Clarissa Crowninshields personal papers, which include personal and business correspondence, receipts and accounts, legal and estate papers and stock certificates. The majority of her correspondence is between her and her guardian, Benjamin Nichols and later his son, Benjamin W. Nichols. In addition to being her guardian, the elder Nichols also acted as the attorney for both Clarissa and her daughter Clara. Clara Thies papers also make up a large portion of the collection and most of her papers are similar in nature to her mothers, though the younger Nichols was her primary correspondent. The remainder of the material consists of various papers of both Benjamin and Benjamin W. Nichols, with notes concerning Clarissas family and other clients.
