The collection contains correspondence concerning the selection of the University of Virginia over Washington and Lee as the site for an observatory, the building of the observatory at Virginia, fundraising, the establishment of astronomy scholarships and a major gift by William H. Vanderbilt . Of interest is an 1879 letter about Monticello as a possible telescope site, an 1870 letter from Frank L. Anderson at Washington and Lee announcing the death of Robert E. Lee, and detailed letters of advice on research to be conducted at the University from Joseph Henry of the Smithsonian, 1870, 1871. Correspondents include Frank Anderson, Alvan Clark, John Draper, Thomas H. Ellis, James Harrison, Joseph Henry, George Frederick Holmes, George D. Johnston, William Preston Johnston, Leander J. McCormick, Leander McCormick-Goodhart, Robert Hall McCormick, Samuel A. Mitchell, S. McDowell Moore, Simon Newcomb, J. H. Safford, A. H. H. Stuart, Charles Scott Venable and William A. Winston. In addition the collection contains plans and a blueprint for the observatory by Wilson Brothers & Co., of Philadelphia. There is also an article from Nature, 1870 February 17, on the Newall telescope, annotated by [Leander J. McCormick?] and inscribed by him to his grandson.
