Organization, founded in 1846, had its origin in the Amistad [Schooner] Incident (1839). The Association supported antislavery churches and other activities on the frontier and in the Northern and Southern border states. After 1861, the AMA established hundreds of schools and churches among Freedmen and other ethnic groups. Although originally multi-denominational, it is now part of the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries. Collection is overwhelmingly correspondence, elaborately indexed. Larger addendum mostly postdates 1920's.

Mead of Waterbury, Connecticut, in which George White describes the beauties of the Cornell University campus, Ithaca, New York, and Cayuga Lake, and the work that he and Mrs. White did to assist her brother, E.P. Gilbert, in the management of Sage College for Women, and the electrification of the building. White adds that he would not want his daughter, Georgia Laura, then a student at Lake Erie Seminary, Painesville, Ohio, to enter Cornell as an undergraduate despite its superior educational opportunities; Miss White was later Dean of Women at Cornell.
