Murray, Hannah Lindley, 1777-1836. The American toilet, ca. 1827.

Title: The American toilet, ca. 1827.

A hand-made book based on the 1827 printed work of the same title by Hannah Murray. In both works, each page displays a drawing with a caption and a rhyming couplet. A section of the design is separately attached and can be lifted up to display a hidden virtue. For example, the lip salve is cheerfulness and the rouge is modesty. In this hand-made book, the drawings are in pencil and inscriptions are in ink, executed on paper with an embossed border. The order of the pages in this book does not precisely match that of the printed work. Also, the drawings are not always the same. For example, the earrings in the 1827 book are clusters of grapes, but in this home-made version, the earrings are fuchsia blossoms. The biggest difference is with the head ornament, as the printed version displays the ornament on the head of a woman, whereas the home-made drawing only shows the ornament, and the ornament is of a different sort from the printed version. A few other minor differences between the two versions are also present.

Travel Diaries, 1808, 1817, 1819, 1825, and undated, kept by Mary Murray of New York City during her summer trips taken in the company of her family to Connecticut and various locations in New York State, including: Niagara Falls, Saratoga Springs, Ballston, Rockaway, Flushing, etc. Diary entries describe travel conditions, accomodations, travel by stage and canal, socializing with fellow travelers, incidents and experiences, gossip among the vacationers, Miss Murray's observations and sentiments regarding the people and places encountered, etc.

Letterbooks (1732-1769) and account books (1732-1748, 1766-1781) of James Murray, a loyalist who fled from Boston, Mass. to Halifax, Nova Scotia during the Revolution. His letterbooks span his life in London prior to his emigration to North Carolina in 1735, his move to Boston in 1765 with discussions of the Stamp Act and its effect on his sugar business, and of events and the political climate in Boston. The account books contain records of his career as a merchant in Boston and Milton in the sugar business and in the sale of other goods, and of his accounts, including rent collections, in Halifax. Also, an invoice book of Mary Murray and Co. (1771-1775) for shipments of cloth and lace to her from London to Boston, and a catalog of books of Murray's personal library.
