Christopher Greenup (1750?-1818) was born in either Loudoun or Westmoreland County, Virginia. During the Revolution, he served as a lieutenant in the 16th Virginia Regiment, and was later promoted to colonel. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar and began practice in Fayette County, Virginia (now a part of Kentucky). He began his political career in 1785, when he served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates. Greenup was also present at the state conventions in 1785 and 1788, and was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1792 to 1797. He was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives a year after, and won the governorship of Kentucky in 1804. Christopher Greenup died at his home in Frankfort, Kentucky, on April 17, 1818.

Born in Westmoreland County, Va., in 1750, Christopher Greenup completed academic studies, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1783, and commenced practice in Fayette County, Ky. (then a part of Virginia). He was clerk of the district court at Harrodsburg (1785-1792); served in the Revolutionary War and attained the rank of colonel; was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1785; was member of the conventions at Danville, Ky., in 1785 and 1788 to consider separation from Virginia; and moved to Frankfort, Ky., in 1792. Upon the admission of Kentucky as a state into the Union he was elected as an Anti-Administration candidate to the Second and Third Congresses; was reelected as a Republican to the Fourth Congress and served from 9 Nov. 1792, to 3 Mar. 1797. He was a member of the State house of representatives in 1798 and also served as clerk of the State senate (1799-1802). He was appointed judge of the circuit court in 1802. He was governor of Kentucky from 1804 to 1808; was presidential elector on the Madison and Clinton ticket in 1808; was justice of the peace in Franklin County in 1812; and was one of the original trustees of Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky. He died in Frankfort, Ky., on 27 Apr. 1818.

These papers are correspondence with and documents signed by Charles Scott. Two broadsides are photostatic reproductions of a call to arms in 1808 (1B53M118) and an amendment to a land act in 1811 (1B62M143). One original broadside (1VF61M201) offers a reward for a runaway slave. Also in that accession are letters from Scott's brother concerning the gold rush in California. A document remitting a fine in 1810 is included in another accession (1VF55W13). One accession (1VF5517) contains Scott's appointment as Brigadier General, a land indenture and two letters from John Evans. There is also a photograph of Scott (1PA54M6 removed to photo archives).

Legal papers, 1797-1810, include an opinion of Edmund Randolph, 1800. Also included are papers of Daviess' brother, Samuel Daviess (1775-1856), lawyer of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, consisting of letters, 1811-1855, legal papers, 1812-1850, and statements of account, 1816-1854; and correspondence of Thomas Patrick Moore, lawyer of Harrodsburg, Kentucky, while serving as U.S. minister to Colombia from 1829-1833. Included are an act to suppress gaming, an act providing housing for the mentally ill in a separate part of the penitentiary, an act concerning the upkeep of the Wilderness Road, and acts redrawing county lines. Of particular interest is the act which provided financial relief to a former Indian captive, Clarinda Allington, and the three children she bore while held in captivity.
