The Alabama State Council of Defense was responsible for coordinating defense activities in the state. The program administrative files result from the council's activities and contain correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, reports, memoranda, lists, photos, posters, and financial records. The files record the activities on the Alabama home front during World War II and cover a variety of topics ranging from civil defense activities to day care facilities. Some topics covered in the records include WAC recruiting, chemical warfare, nutrition, recreation, salvage, agriculture, surplus property, food and fuel conservation, blackouts, blood drives, emergency medical services, cancer control, labor groups, and the Aliceville, Ala., prisoner of war camp. The records of the Alabama War Chest are included in the series, as well as information on war chests in other states. Correspondence and publicity information from the National War Fund, the Regional Office of Civilian Defense, and the United Service Organization (USO) can also be found in the files. Of particular interest in the National War Fund files are publicity photos which document conditions in Europe and China, and Alabama servicemen. Included in this group of Alabama servicemen is a series of photos of Sgt. Henry E. Erwin, who was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. The series also contains USO photos of activities in segregated USO clubs in Alabama. Monthly reports and correspondence from the local defense councils record programs on the local level, such as Civilian War Assistance and the Citizens Service Corps. Other local activities covered in the records include fire equipment allocations, the establishment of observation posts in the counties, town meetings, and American Red Cross drives. Some of the correspondents in the records include Governor Chauncey Sparks, Governor Frank M. Dixon, F. H. LaGuardia, Loula Dunn, Haygood Paterson, Ralph T. Bradbeer, Jerome Connor, B. A. Dyar, Sollace Mitchell, Charles H. Murchison, Col. Irvine F. Belser, W. A. Steadman, and Horner G. Fisher.
