Manuscript collection, in multiple hands, of 76 business and personal letters addressed primarily to De Havilland. Early letters in the collection contain military orders to De Havilland, including marching orders in 1805 and a request for a sketch of the frontier from Amnair to Nundubar; other letters from Captain Agnew concern the search for a suitable place for the cantonment of forces in 1806. In 1807, Montstuart Elphinstone sends routes and positions in the Nagpoor Country and mentions a delay in De Havilland's appointment to the survey of the Deccan. Later letters request recommendations for promotions and report on the capture of Satara, the contested fort of Thalner, the commencement of the siege at Assur, and an explosion of a battery in which "30 sepoys were killed." A letter dated 1843 asks for De Havilland's advice regarding the feasibility of a proposal to construct a pier at Madras. Personal letters from family to De Havilland include those from his wife and siblings, which discuss news of children, friends, and neighbors. The collection also contains several letters from De Havilland to his father; one dated from Trichinopoly in 1799 discusses the military affairs regarding the war against Tipu Sultan. Elsewhere, he mentions the birth of his daughter; his enjoyment of the monsoons; and the military activities in India. Also included in the collection are numerous personal letters to Mrs. De Havilland from other women. One, from Martha Garrard, provides information regarding her tenancy of Mrs. De Havilland's house in Seringapatam; her troubles engaging new servants; routine social activities; and gossip about acquaintances. Mrs. De Havilland also receives similar letters from Mrs. Meachem.
