The National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA is an ecumenical fellowship of 35 Christian faith groups in the United States. Its member communions include a wide variety of Mainline Protestant, Orthodox, African-American, Evangelical and historic Peace churches.

NCCCUSA continued the work of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America. In 1950, the Foreign Missions Conference of North America became the Division of Foreign Missions of the NCCCUSA. In 1965, a reorganization led to the integration of the Division of Foreign Missions and the Central Department of Church World Service under a new name, the Division of Overseas Ministries.

Historical Note

The Constituting Convention took place in Cleveland, Ohio, November 28-December 1, 1950. The program states:

"Behind this gathering lie ten years of continuous discussion of the best procedure for bringing about fuller fellowship and greater cooperation among the churches of our country. It is the outward manifestation of a deepening sense of our spiritual unity in our Lord Jesus Christ as the one Head of the Church. It is a forward movement in the direction of a greater Christian unity while at the same time we preserve the Christian liberty which is our precious heritage."

Historical Note

This collection contains the proceedings of the first conference, held in San Francisco, May 1955, the second conference, 1958, and "The Chinese in the United States and the Chinese Christian churches" by Horace R. Cayton and Anne O. Lively, a survey conducted prior to the first conference to provide information and points of discussion. C.C. Hung discusses the beginnings and purpose of the conference (see File Folder 2), "We all have a sustained interest in our ministry. We all need to share our problems and experiences. There are many things that we cannot do as a single church or a single denomination, but in unity and cooperation we can achive our goal. We should not be discouraged if we cannot find a solution for all our many problems, but at the very least we will have a better understanding of the existence of the problems and face them more realistically." Papers and discussions included evangelism, worship styles, leadership, differences between China born and American born Chinese, the teaching and use of both Chinese and English, social service needs in the community, and stewardship and financial issues.

Henry Williams Sherrill was a graduate of Yale College, Union Theological Seminary and Virginia Theological Seminary. The records are from 1952-1970 with the bulk dating from 1960-1970. The bulk of the record in this series highlight TALC's initial relationships, approximately its first 10 years, with the two interdenominational organizations. Types of records that comprise this series include business correspondence, news clippings, circular letters, brochures, pamphlets, annual reports, topical reports, minutes and agenda, bulletins, memoranda, reports from conferences attendees, and financial reports. The predominant record type is handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, of which Pastor Schiotz is the principal author. Even though TALC was not a member of NCCCUSA, these records represent TALC's interest in the ministry of the NCCCUSA, as well as several folders of correspondence with TALC congregation members regarding the issue of TALC joining the NCCCUSA. In addition to the correspondence regarding the possibility of TALC membership in NCCCUSA, there are also several folders of correspondence from TALC members also concerned about the church joining the WCC.

Rusch, Director, Department for Ecumenical Relations for the Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME) from 1979-1987. The records were generated from 1969-1980 and comprise handwritten and typewritten business correspondence, copies of meeting minutes, papers on various ecumenical topics, newsletters, promotional and informational literature, financial material pertaining to grants issued by the DWME for ecumenical projects and services, guidelines for grant funding, and copies of LCA guidelines regarding ecumenical relationships. The series is subdivided into areas of ecumenical work within the LCA, its partnerships with other Lutheran bodies, interfaith and interdenominational dialogues, and its work with national and international ecumenical organizations. Folders pertaining to interfaith dialogues and relationships between the LCA and other Christian denominations, as well as the Jewish faith, include copies of correspondence between the churches, summaries of progress made on topics of common interest and concern, and differences in particular doctrinal positions. There are records generated from before the creation of the DWME, but were kept in this series for continuity purposes. Files are arranged alphabetically.

This series contains seven microfilm reels of Division of American Missions publications. Publications were filmed together by department and or subject. The first three reels in the collection, for the most part, contain general publications of the Division. In addition, reel two contains copies of the American Lutheran Church publication, The Lutheran Banner (1947-1950), which regards the ALC Negro Missions activities which were taken over by the NLC in 1951. Departmental publications in this category have been indicated where possible. Reels three and four contain Office for Human Relations and Department for the Christian Approach to the Jewish People publications. Reels four and five include Department of Church in Town and Country and reels five through seven contain those of the Office of Urban Church. Planning. In addition, the series contains four boxes of general publications of the Division in paper form. These publications, in some cases, are duplicates of those on the microfilm. Those which have not been microfilmed Include informational booklets concerning the Division and a geographical directory outlining locations of NLC and Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod churches by city and state (1950). In 1958, the Division of American Missions published a "County By County Church Distribution Study Related to the Lutheran Churches" which was based on research provided by the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA Church Distribution Study (1957). Both studies are included in the series.

The collection includes materials on a wide range of subjects with an emphasis on the menace of communism, both foreign and domestic. The research and correspondence files of Allen Zoll and the New York-based National Council for American Education (NCAE) constitute a large portion of the Hargis Papers. The NCAE was a communist watchdog organization active during the 1940s and 1950s. In 1961 Zoll sold his files to Hargis, who used the NCAE files as the foundation for the Christian Crusade's research files, which span the period ca. 1960-1980. Related materials acquired by Special Collections from the University of Michigan have been integrated into the collection. The collection includes a large section on subjects such as the House Un-American Activities Committee, Joseph McCarthy, and related topics such as communism in American education. The collection includes materials related to the battle between fundamentalist and liberal churches, especially Carl McIntire's campaign against ecumenicalism as represented by the National Council of Churches. Also included are materials pertaining to the upheaval of the 1960s, featuring materials on desegregation, the cultural revolution, and materials from radical student and black nationalist groups. The collection includes numerous materials on Rhodesia, South Africa, and the anti-apartheid movement in the 1970s. The collection includes an excellent collection of newspapers, with titles representing a diverse selection of groups. Right wing newspapers represent divergent groups featuring anti-labor, patriotic, fundamentalist Christian, neo-Nazi, and white supremacist viewpoints. Similarly, left wing newspapers include titles with ecumenical, anti-war, pro-labor, socialist, communist, radical student, and black nationalist viewpoints. Finally, materials include video and audio recordings of programs by Hargis. Materials include correspondence, monographs, pamphlets, flyers, posters, newspapers, clippings, and other papers. The collection includes both video and audio tapes. The collection includes few photographs. Nine Billy James Hargis scapbooks have been microfilmed with the originals returned to the donor.

Correspondence includes letters and some printed emails to and from Branch related to the research, writing, and publishing of his books about King and the civil rights movement; pamphlets, notes, clippings, and other printed material are interfiled. He died in Norway in April, 1974.

The records are divided into sub-series for correspondence, field correspondence, subject files, Lutheran Council in the USA, Lutheran World Federation, National Council of Churches of Christ USA, and World Council of Churches. They are arranged alphabetically within series. The Correspondence sub-series contains letters filed alphabetically, usually by the name of the correspondent, except for the first folder, which was general. Field Correspondence is divided according to the country of correspondence. Again, the first folder is a general one, containing cover letters sent to all fields. Subject files include various committee obligations, inter-church and intra-church activities, conferences, personnel matters, and BWM contacts. The remaining four sub-series all involve cooperative mission efforts with other church bodies. The Lutheran Council in the USA (LCUSA) files and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) files both track cooperative efforts with other Lutheran church bodies. Much of the LCUSA material is related to its Division of Mission Services; the LWF material to its USA National Committee, Advisory Committee on World Mission and Service. Sovik's participation in and correspondence related to these two cooperative bodies seems to be part of his responsibility as the head of one of the participating church mission bodies, as well as a result of his prior experience with the LWF. The National Council of Churches of Christ USA (NCCC) and World Council of Churches (WCC) files note cooperative ecumenical efforts. The NCCC work was done under its Division of Overseas Missions and the WCC work through the Division of World Mission and Evangelism. Sovik served on this latter board. There is also much in the WCC files related to cooperative theological education efforts. It was not possible to determine whether Sovik was an actual committee member in many of these agencies of the NCCC and WCC, since lists of members were not included. The Bureau of Social Science Research Files collection are comprised of materials from the two sociological studies for which Albert Gollin was the principal investigator; the March on Washington (l963) and the Poor People's Campaign (l968). In addition to material generated by the BSSR in their study and analysis of these events, the collection contains documents from both the March on Washington and the Poor People's Campaign that Gollin and his team gathered for their studies. The March on Washington series has been divided into three sub-series: Study, Reference and Survey. Included are planning documents on Gollin's organization of the study of the March; reference material used to analyze it and previous marches; survey instruments and questionnaires; interview guidelines and transcripts; media-related materials such as newspaper clippings and television program transcripts; and reference material for the final report. Of interest are transcripts of interviews with James Farmer, Dr. Anna Arnold Hedgeman, John Lewis, Cleveland Robinson, Bayard Rustin and Whitney Young. The Poor People's Campaign (PPC) series documents the active planning for the PPC beginning in early l968 and intensifying in May of that year. The series is arranged into four sub-series: Study, Survey, Reference and Media. The Study sub-series encompasses the BSSR's study of the campaign, reports and other writings, and studies of civil disobedience. Gollin's involvement with SCLC's administration of the PPC is evident in the files and documents included here. The Survey sub-series includes codebooks, survey instruments, and interview guidelines. There are transcripts of interviews conducted by BSSR staff and volunteers with participants as well as caravan reports from participant-observers who travelled with the caravans. The Reference sub-series contains documents related to the lobbying efforts of the organizers of the PPC and shows the role of the national and local organizations that collaborated with the PPC. The Media sub-series includes articles and reports on the civil rights movement, as well as newspaper clippings and periodicals, 1963-1970, containing articles about both the March on Washington and the Poor People's Campaign in black and mainline publications.

Title: Haitian Refugee collection 1972-2004

Ira Gollobin, an immigration rights attorney and author, served as pro bono counselor to refugees from all over the world including Nazi Germany and Duvalierist Haiti. His work with Haitian refugees, the purview of this collection, began in 1974. In this capacity he served as lead counsel on several major cases that were pivotal to the rights of Haitian refugees, the so-called "boat people." Gollobin's critical role as lead counsel was as important as his active role in developing grassroots organizations that made the public aware and active in Haitian refugee legislation issues. Through his affiliation with major organizations such as Church World Service and the communist founded American Committee for the Protection of the Foreign Born, he created channels for Haitian-American led coalitions such as the National Coalition for Haitian Rights and Haitian Refugee Center, two prominent activist organizations, to form and help steer the campaign for the rights of Haitian refugees. He organized a broad-based strategy that combined legal advocacy to secure basic freedoms for Haitians with long-term policy arguments aimed at granting thousands of Haitian immigrants the right to due process in filing asylum claims. The Haitian Refugee Collection, 1972-2004, documents Ira Gollobin's involvement in multiple legal battles related to Haitian political asylum from the 1970s to the early 1990s. The collection highlights much of the legal and organizational features of the plight of Haitian refugees entering the United States in the late twentieth century. It represents one particular U.S. immigration discourse and the different treatment accorded to some refugees. The collection consists largely of drafts and copies of legal documents, meeting summaries, public outreach material that includes petitions, flyers, pamphlets, and other galvanizing materials; administrative papers from his various organizational affiliations; and research material for refugee asylum and cases. It covers the latter part of Gollobin's legal career beginning with his tenure as a legal consultant for the National Council of Churches in 1974, and continuing through his advocacy and consultant work until 2004 on behalf of Haitian organizations.
