Collection consists of letters to Desire Albert Barre and his father, Jean Jacques Barre, members of a family who designed coins, stamps and commemorative medals for the French government, Barre pere as "graveur general des monnais" at the Hotel des Monnais, Paris. Correspondents represent many of the leading painters, sculptors, engravers and architects of the day, including David d'Angers, Hippolyte Flandrin, Eugene Fromentin, Charles Francois Jalabert, Eugene Isabey, Adrien Dauzats, Jean Leon Gerome and Francois Pascal Simon Gerard.

The collection consists of eighty-nine letters addressed to Louis Philippe's intendant Pascalis relating to the purchase and commission of works of art for Louis Philippe's private collection. Written prior to his accession to the throne, the letters are detailed instructions mentioning specific works, mostly paintings, and often contain Louis Philippe's personal reactions to the artist or to the art object in question. Several of the letters concern the purchase and arrangement of furniture for Louis Philippe's private residences. Artists mentioned include Horace and Carle Vernet, Gerard, Boilly, Prud'hon, Delaroche, Isabey, Leopold Robert, Gericault, Girodet-Trioson and Ingres.

The artist is in no hurry, as he has plenty of work. He adds in postscript that he could not visit Mrs. Laval because of tremendous rheumatic pain. Signed and dated 12 Sept.

Collection consists of letters to various correspondents, mostly concerning artistic matters. Included are letters to the royal chancellor about the use of a costume for his painting the "Sacre de Charles X" (1826); to a M. Bovine about exhibiting a portrait of the King (n.d.); to M. Lalande, Architecte du roi at Versailles, furnishing details about the size and requirements for framing and placement of paintings in the palace; to M. Naigeon, curator of the Luxembourg museum, granting permission for his student Gambit to copy his l'Amour et Psyche (1835); and to M. Dulci commenting at length on a critical response to Gerard's work. One detailed letter of 1834 recommends the engraver Girard for his contributions to the technique of copperplate engraving, asserting that comparable achievements in the medium can only be found among English artists.
