The collection holds documents related to early southern New England railroads, particularly those that were predecessor lines of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, the railroad predominant railroad in the region from 1872, when it was established through the merger of the New York and New Haven Railroad and the Hartford and New Haven Railroad, to 1969, when it was absorbed into Penn Central.
For almost one hundred years the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad, better known as the New Haven Railroad, was the primary means of passenger and freight transportation in southern New England. Chartered in 1872, this merger between the New York & New Haven and Hartford & New Haven railroads later included the long desired rail link between Boston and New York. Approximately one hundred small independent railroads were built in southern New England between 1826 and the 1880s. By 1904, the majority were absorbed into the vast New Haven system. At its peak in 1929, the New Haven Railroad owned and operated 2,131 miles of track throughout eastern New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. On Janurary 1, 1969, it formally folded into the PennCentral Railroad system.
Formed in 1872 by the consolidation of the Hartford and New Haven Railroad Company and the New York and New Haven Railroad Company; reorganized as the Penn Central Transportation Company in 1968.

By 1899 he was the chief engineer for construction and maintenance of way and in 1903 became vice-president in charge of construction. During those years he supervised the planning and construction of Buffalo Union Station, the Weehawken (N.J.) Terminal and the modern Grand Central Station. In 1907 Wilgus opened his own consulting practice and advised railroad companies on construction and improvement projects for states and municipalities including several concerned with the improvement of passenger and freight transportation in the New York Metropolitan area. During World War I he directed transportation for the Allied Expeditionary Forces in France. After his retirement from private practice in 1930, he devoted much of his time to writing and research on military and civilian transportation issues while working in the private sector. Title:
Harry F. Brown papers, 1908-1933, 1959, 1964.
The Harry F. Brown papers are composed of 478 images on glass plate negatives, photographic prints, flexible negatives, 35mm film, and 35mm mounted slides. The majority of the images were taken between 1908 and 1933, with a few from 1959 and 1964. Most of the images contain railroad electrification equipment, and specifically anchor bridges and catenary wires along the shoreline route of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. Precisely numbered anchor bridges with exact locations appear in the photographic prints and the 35mm slides. There are also groups of other types of images within the collection. The flexible negatives contain interior and exterior images of the power plants at Cos Cob, Connecticut and New Haven, Connecticut as well as at Nantasket, Massachusetts. Both the glass plate negatives and the flexible negatives depict the construction of caternary wires. The flexible images show the Milford Bridge under construction. The 35mm slides contain a series of images of an unidentified train wreck as well as images of multiple unit passenger cars. Finally, the slides also contain images of equipment sold to the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad by Goodrum Substation near Porter, Indiana. The collection includes several noteworthy images. The glass plate negatives include an image of a model of an electrification system and an electrified railroad car on a table. The photographic prints contaion two images of a fire on the railroad tracks. Finally, there are a few images throughout the collection of catenary wires being built by workmen with horses and buggies.

This subgroup of maps and drawings consists of items extracted from the correspondence files or in some cases purchased from private collectors who salvaged them from the company. All maps and drawings relating to right of way and structures have been arranged here, including items from the files of other departments on the grounds that they were originally prepared by the Engineering Department and to put all drawings of a similar type together. Because the drawings are a synthetic collection of fragments, they have been arranged somewhat arbitrarily according to the type of thing depicted.

Title:
Meriden & Cromwell Railroad, Meriden Waterbury & Connecticut River Railroad Photograph album, undated, 1885-1951.
The album, compiled by Mr. James M.S. Ullman of Meriden, Connecticut, consists of 185 photographs almost exclusively depicting the locomotives, stations and other scenes of the Meriden & Cromwell Railroad and the Meriden, Waterbury, and Connecticut River Railroad. Most of the photographs have brief descriptions; most are dated. Of special interest are photographs of wrecks on August 10, 1888, and July 19, 1889, at Red Bridge, in Meriden, Connecticut, and a trolley wreck on October 10, 1913, on the Berlin Branch. Also of interest are photographs from the 1920s and 1930s of men on motorcycles who used the Meriden station as a base for their motorcycle club, and of Highland House (town unknown), a historic house that was located near the railroad line and burned down on November 24, 1914.

Title:
New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Photographic Negative collection, ca. 20th century.
The negatives are primarily views of stations although structures and equipment can often be seen. Most of the photographic negatives have been identified through examination of the pictures. For this reason, station names have been determined but other details, such as the data of the photograph, often have not. Over 30 of the negatives have not been identified although in some cases clues can be found in image. Archives & Special Collections welcomes information concerning the unidentified negatives. In addition to the negatives, the collection contains "positives" of each picture. The positives were made through a digital scanning process and , while they were not photographic quality, they provide an image which will assist researchers who have difficulty "reading" negatives.
