Sir Barry Jackson was the owner and founder of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He had formed an amateur company called the Pilgrim Players, the success of which led to the creation of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1913. This was the first purpose built repertory theatre and was home to the Birmingham Repertory Company. Jackson's Birmingham Rep had a wide repertoire, including innovative modern dress Shakespeare, Greek drama, and modern experimental drama. Many of the plays transferred to London or abroad. Jackson had an eye for young talent, and gave valuable experience to many actors, including Laurence Olivier, Peggy Ashcroft, Edith Evans, Ralph Richardson, Julie Christie, and Derek Jacobi. He transferred to the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre Company at Stratford in 1946, and though he returned to Birmingham Rep in 1948, he retired from running the company. Jackson died in 1961.
Founder of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Arbuthnot, Malcolm, 1877-1967. George Bernard Shaw Collection.
Title:
George Bernard Shaw Collection. 1879-1950.
Collection consists of eight boxes and four albums of photographs (various processes represented), spanning the 19th and 20th centuries. A large portion of these images are portraits of Shaw. Other subjects include stills from play productions, actors, and film stills from George Bernard Shaw plays adapted for film. Also included are a number of photographs of Shaw with such notable personalities as H. G. Wells, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Charlie Chaplin, Marion Davies, Clark Gable, Auguste Rodin, and Helen Keller. The images were made by various photographers including Alvin Langdon Coburn, Howard Coster, W. & D. Downey, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Frederick Evans, Yousuf Karsh, Florence Vandamm, and Shaw himself. Three of the albums were assembled by the Ransom Center in Shaw's original groupings. The fourth album was assembled by a Ms. B. L. Lyle, of the Lyles of Westbourne, and it contains ten images of Shaw, and five images taken by him. Taken together this collection of photographs provides an excellent overview of Shaw as both dramatist and man.

Herbert M. Prentice papers 1925-1960
The collection is almost entirely bound promptbooks, annotated with notes and cues by Prentice, for the plays he produced. The extensive handwritten staging directions as well as many loose lighting and property plots, cast lists and set design diagrams provide substantial documentation of these productions of the regional British theater in this period (1920s-1950s). There are also some autobiographical writings, notes and drafts for speeches he gave, a small amount of correspondence, mostly with playwrights, photographs from unidentified productions and some photographs of Prentice with colleagues.

Papers regarding the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, 1917-1960
Title:
Papers regarding the Birmingham Repertory Theatre 1917-1960
The Birmingham Repertory Theatre of Birmingham, England, was founded on February 15, 1913, by Sir Barry Jackson (1879-1961), who was knighted in 1925 for services to theater. From the beginning, the Theatre's repertoire was extraordinarily wide, including Greek drama, medieval morality plays, Shakespeare in both traditional costume and modern dress, farce comedy and experimental works. A new building was designed and constructed in the 1970s. Consists of photocopied correspondence to the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, much of it addressed to theatre administrator Cyril Phillips, the bulk of it concerning the Theatre's 25th anniversary celebration in 1938. A number of letters from George Bernard Shaw, all dated 1923, concern an imminent production of his play BACK TO METHUSELAH. There is also a photostat of a contract with Shaw, dated 1917, granting production rights to several of his plays. Other correspondents include J. B. Priestley, Peggy Ashcroft, Errol Flynn, Robert Donat, Stanley Lupino, Brian Ahern, and Somerset Maugham.

Rutherston, Albert Daniel, 1881-1953. Letters, ca. 1915-1945.
Title:
Letters, ca. 1915-1945.
Primarily letters from Rutherston to editors or publishers, including fourteen to Harold Monro of the Poetry Bookshop (1915-1925), concerning book illustration. He discusses coloration, technical processes, correcting proofs, and his reactions to the published product; gives the conditions under which he will accept work, and his fees; and mentions Paul Nash. Two of the letters focus on Rutherston's work with the theater. The first (to Monro, 1915) refers to the publication of his lecture at Leeds University entitled "Decoration in the art of the theatre" (London, 1919). The second (to Sir Barry Jackson, founder of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, n.d.) furnishes information on an exhibition of theater art at the Victoria and Albert museum. Arranged chronologically.
