Minutes of the board of directors, correspondence, notes, arguments, memoranda, drafts of statements, completed questionnaires, annual reports, lists of Corporation, Board and staff members, booklets, leaflets, clippings, and other material pertain to administration of the Hospital, particularly financial difficulties and the Board/staff controversy during the 1950s over admitting male doctors to practice there. Included are notes on the Blanche Ames Ames Fund, 1952, and printed material on the School of Nursing, women in medicine, and medical education.

Papers of Theresa Jacobson Morse, 1935-1951

Title: Papers of Theresa Jacobson Morse

The collection consists exclusively of Morse's work-related papers. Materials from her work with the National War Labor Board consist primarily of correspondence, reports, and her notes. She seems to have focused particularly on the textile industry in Massachusetts. There are syllabi, handouts, and notes from courses on labor that she took at Harvard (1946-1947). Morse's work with the League of Women Voters evidently also focused on labor and economic issues; there are printed materials, correspondence, memos, and meeting minutes about state taxes and public expenditures in Massachusetts and on such issues as strikes and collective bargaining. Morse's work with United Community Services is documented in memoranda, meeting minutes, and reports. Of particular note are the reports of the Recreation, Informal Education and Group Work Division on the facilities of many of the institutions in greater Boston that were affiliated with UCS. There are also correspondence, memos, and reports from the Massachusetts Committee of the Midcentury White House Conference on Children and Youth. Her work with Jewish organizations is not documented in the collection.

Correspondence, minutes, annual reports, financial records, wills, photos, printed pamphlets and articles. Largest portion of the collection concerns the New England Hospital (formerly the New England Hospital for Women and Children) controversy in the 1950s over its continuing existence as a women's hospital and hiring of male physicians. Ames and other board members attempted to obtain funds to continue the hospital with female physicians only and to re-open the nurses training school. Also included is material on early 20th century suffrage in Massachusetts, on birth control in Massachusetts during the 1940s, and letters and reports re: the Woman Citizen, 1926-1928.

Collection contains administrative and financial records, including minutes of meetings of the Board of Managers, annual reports, and ledgers; correspondence of the Directors with Board members, social and government agencies, donors, businesses, students, and teachers; internal memoranda; catalogs; 8000 vocational placement index cards; news releases; bulletins; scrapbooks; 300 photos; clippings; and other material. The bulk of the collection, Office files, divided into two subseries: Administration and Program, contains records pertaining to the Board of Directors, staff/personnel, physical plant, financial matters, insurance, other social agencies, government agencies, history, publicity, industrial classes, vocational guidance and placement, industries, settlement services, and camps. Most of the records before about 1910 were destroyed in two fires.
