Greene, Nathanael, 1742-1786. Papers, 1777-1780

Title: Nathanael Greene Papers 1777-1780

Nathanael Greene was one of the leading commanders in the Continental Army, and the only officer George Washington saw as capable of leading in his absence. Greene served as a field commander, member of Washington's staff, Quartermaster General, and commander of the Army in the Southern Theater. Greene was born on July 27, 1742 in Potowomut, Rhode Island to a Quaker family, who believed that their children would learn more from manual labor then from attending school. Lacking a formal education Greene was very intelligent and taught himself to read, developing early on a love of books - particularly military history and theory. It was through reading, not experience, where Greene learned his knowledge of military science. Between 1778 and 1780 he reluctantly served as Quartermaster General, and was able to drastically improve supplying the Continental Army. Greene ended his military career leading the American Southern army to victory over the British. Greene died in Georgia in June 1786. The Papers of Nathanael Greene come from Greene's tenure as Quartermaster General of the Continental Army between 1778 and 1780. The collection primarily consists of Greene's correspondence with officers in the quartermaster department, officers in the Army (including George Washington), and members of the Continental Congress; relating to the operation of the Quartermaster Department with requests for supplies, forage, and money. In addition, there is also correspondence between officers of the Quartermaster Department. The content of the letters provide a detailed account of the logistical obstacles that Greene and his subordinates faced in trying to keep not only the Quartermaster Department but the Continental Army running. The papers do not contain any material relating to Greene's military service or private life either before or after his tenure as quartermaster general.

Title: Alexander Scammell orderly book, 1780.

This volume is an orderly book kept by Alexander Scammell, adjutant general and aide de camp to George Washington for the Continental Army in New Jersey dating from March 23- July 23, 1780. Orders were issued at Morristown from March 23-June 6, 1780, and then from Short Hills, Connecticut Farms (now called Union Township), Springfield, Whippany, Ramapo, and Preakness until July 23, 1780. Typical orders regard troop movements and formation, rations of food and rum, and court marshal proceedings. Most of the court marshal proceedings were held for relatively minor offenses, such as leaving camp at night or unofficer-like behavior.

Officer, Continental Army. Letter to Lt. Colonel Badlam discussing removal of stores from Hackensack Church, reiterating that they must economize by keeping guards and detachments small and sending extra troops to positions where they would be most useful. Scammell requests a return of the troops and mentions possibility of malingerers at Fishkill hospital. A draft of Badlam's reply, Fishkill, 10th August 1779, is on the verso of Scammell's letter. In complying, Badlam forwards the return and promises to "pay particular attention not only to the superintending of the Hospitals, but also to the guards and detachments."

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

Microfilm copies of manuscript material, 1780-1813, from the New York Public Library Manuscript Division includes one reel with letters received by Green Clay. The second reel contains various orderly books from [Hezekiah] Maham's Legion, South Carolina, 1781-1782; Brig. General Green Clay, March 19-Aug. 25, 1813; and New Jersey Line, Dec. 1780-June 23, 1781. Maham's order book details the organization of a cavalry regiment of light dragoons, including returns and appraisal of horses. Green's order book, written by his aide, Jos. H. Hawkins, details the march from Lexington, Ky. to help defend Ft. Meigs, Ohio; and includes diagrams of marching formation and camp layout. The New Jersey order book includes copies of orders issued by the Adjutant General Alexander Scammell.

Also, some of the letters concern British soldiers and officers taken prisoner by American forces. Correspondents include Cyrus Keith, James Bowdoin, Joseph Pearse Palmer, Samuel Holden Parsons, William Heath, Francis Dana, and John Hancock.
