Tripolitan War collection, 1804-1805.
Title:
Tripolitan War collection, 1804-1805.
The Tripolitan War Collection, 1804-1805, includes two booklets containing details of courts-martial held in June 1804 on board the frigate Congress, bound for Tripoli. With William Eaton (1764-1811) acting as Judge Advocate and Capt. John Rodgers (1773-1838) presiding, the trials involved seamen and a midshipman from the frigate President, commanded by Samuel Barron ( -1810). The records consist of orders signed by Commodore Barron, a copy of a "mutinous" letter of complaint written by seaman Robert Quinn ( - ), and details of his and others' severe sentences for mutiny, desertion, and absence without leave. There is also a letter in Arabic, with Italian translation, written by Bashaw Caramalli Hamet ( - ) in 1805, and a letterbook kept by Commodore Samuel Barron, 17-30 August 1804, which contains mainly copies of letters pertaining to the American blockade of Tripoli, written by Barron, commander-in-chief, and James Simpson ( - ), American counsul in Tangier, to John Rodgers and James Barron (1768-1851), fellow commanders of American ships in Tangier Bay. The letters are a record of the watchful movements of the American navy during the blockade, the movements of Moorish warships, and the results of Simpson's diplomatic dealings with the Emperor of Morocco. The collection also includes a volume containing a quarter bill, 1804, for the U.S.S. Constitution under the command of Edward Preble (1761-1807). It is a list of crew members and their ranks.

Preble, Charles E. Preble family genealogical papers, ca. 1918-1990.
Title:
Preble family genealogical papers, ca. 1918-1990.
Chiefly genealogical worksheets complied by Charles E. Preble, Jr. These sheets list the family information about each person. This includes spouses, children, and dates of birth, death, and marriage. It also notes the place where these significant events occurred, if possible. This allows one to track the movements of people to different towns, states, or countries. The worksheets are organized alphabetically by first name (chronologically when a first name is shared by more than one person). There is also a folder of miscellaneous information about the family. This includes sketchy family trees, newspaper clippings, and information about the family crest. One of the newspaper clippings is from 1918 describing the Preble family reunion.

Title:
Tobias Lear diary, 1803 June 24 - October 23.
Lear discusses his day to day affairs including marriage to "my dear Fanny" [Frances Dandridge Henley]; boarding with [Thomas?] Law; initiation in the Masonic Lodge at Alexandria; dining with Jefferson and Madison, news of the Louisiana Purchase; July 4th celebration; journey to Boston via Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York; visit to his Portsmouth, N.H. home; a rumor, begun by John Marshall, that he had suppressed certain papers of George Washington; and preparations for the journey to Algiers on the U.S. Constitution under Edward Preble [no entries the month of the voyage.]. He discusses the capture of an American brig; the replacement of Commodore Richard Morris; assistance to the H.M.S. Childers, an English brig in distress, whose captain, Sir George Bolton, was carrying dispatches to Lord Nelson; discussions on Barbary affairs with consuls James L. Cathcart and James Simpson; the arrival of the Emperor of Morocco in Tangiers and subsequent negotiations including ratification of the Treay of 1786; and attempts by British men of war to lure away American sailors. The diary ends on October 23, a week before the capture of William Bainbridge and the crew of the Philadelphia. Additional people mentioned in the diary include William Bainbridge, John Dandridge Henley, Isaac Hull, David Humphreys, Rufus King, Benjamin Lincoln, John Rodgers, Samuel Smith, James Sullivan, and the Marqués de Yrujo.
