Title: Commonplace book, 18th century.

Manuscript, in a single hand, of a collection of copies of about 17 historical and political documents. Contents include An historical account of the titles, pedigrees, and pretensions, of the kings of England between 1066 and 1688, as well as copies of numerous letters, including a letter dated 1714 Apr 17 to Richard Steele from Philo-Basilius discussing the "Pretender" James Prince of Wales; an account of the massacre of Glencoe, Scotland, 1692 (dated 1692 Apr 20); a copy of a letter dated 1695 Mar 29 from Thomas Ken, bishop of Worcester to [Thomas] Tenison, archbishop of Canterbury expressing his disappointment at Tennison's having "grossly" failed in his performance of Queen Mary's funeral sermon; and a letter to Queen Anne from the Duke of Lorraine refusing Parliament's request to remove the Chevalier De St. George from Lorraine. Other entries include Dr. Thomas Bishop's request, on his deathbed, to thank Dr. George Hicks Dean of Worcester for his constancy; a letter dated 1683 from John Tillotson, archbishop of Canterbury to Nicholas Hunt, "who had a cancer in his mouth of which he died in 1687," telling him of the death of Tillotson's child and exhorting Hunt to prepare properly for his own death; a copy of a speech, dated 1688 May 25, by Sir Peter Pett; a copy of a speech to Parliament, dated 1689 May 10, by James II; and a copy of "Bp. Hall's irrefragable propositions concerning oaths" by Timothy Hall, bishop of Oxford. At the beginning of the volume are three recipes, two to cure the bite of a mad dog and one for fever.
