The collection consists of papers of Joseph Mackey Brown from 1860-1930. The papers contain correspondence, drafts of essays, and an 1869 diary. The early correspondence to Brown is mainly from family numbers including his mother Elizabeth Grisham Brown, his sister Mary V. Connally, his brother Julius L. Brown, and his uncles James Steele and N.V. Brown. The later correspondence includes a few letters to Brown from Alexander S. Clay, William H. Taft, Clifford Walker, Lamartine G. Hardman, John M. Slaton, Tom Watson, Hugh Dorsey, N.E. Harris and W.J. Harris dealing mainly with Georgia political matters. Of particular interest are letters written by Brown discussing labor relations within the state. The diary was written by Brown in 1869 while residing in Atlanta. The entries discuss schooling and the activities of his family, including his father Joseph E. Brown. The collection also includes typescripts of Brown's historical writings on Mexico.

The collection consists of papers of the Joseph E. and Elizabeth Grisham Brown family of Cherokee County, Georgia from 1847-1951. The papers consists of correspondence, genealogical notes, photographs, and scrapbooks. The bulk of the correspondence (1866-1884), contains family letters to and from Joseph E. Brown; his wife, Elizabeth Grisham Brown; her parents Joseph Grisham and Mary L. Grisham; the Brown children, Mary V. Brown (Connally), Franklin Pierce Brown; and other relatives including uncle James Steele and cousin Mary E. Maxwell. The scrapbooks (46) contain a variety of materials including newsclippings and ephemera, some relating to Brown's political career, kept by various members of the Brown family.
