Title: Brandon families papers, 1856-1892.

The collection consists of records created in the town of Brandon, Vermont, by members of the Briggs and Higgins families. One part involves material relating to the Brandon Post Office, probably collected by Julius E. Higgins. These include letters from neighboring post offices asking for stamps, letters from the railroad mail service testing delivery times, letters inquiring as to what would be the most expeditious way to route mail. There are also many business papers of Julius E. Higgins from 1856 to 1891. He was an agent for the Brandon Lime and Marble Company and the Leicester Mineral Paint Company. Much of the correspondence relates to the purchase of staves for barrels, purchase of hay and straw, and other business items, plus a number of household accounts. There are a great many cancelled checks. There are also some school exercises, some by Annie S. Higgins, in French. The collection also includes business papers of George Briggs, and a few of his father, Ebenezer. The miscellaneous folder of correspondence was probably tied to George Briggs's estate work. Most of the financial papers in this collection are related to household expenses, though there are some business expenses also. There is a printed advertisement for the Howe Improved Weighting Scales of 1856, school bills for his children at Vermont Episcopal Institute (1886) and Bishop Hopkins Hall (1889).
