Title: Papers, 1874-1885.

The James M. Swank papers consist of typescript copies of 108 letters written to Swank when he was collecting information for his histories of the iron and steel industry. They were solicited from iron pioneers of the early 19th century or their surviving descendants. The great value of the information is that it comes from iron company operators, engineers, inventors and other people in close contact with the iron industry from the 1820s. Swank was particularly interested in the development of smelting with anthracite and coke and the origin of technology used in his own day.
